Any time you have a business area that draws a lot of people to it you are going to see more instances of crime. Just be safe & you should be OK.

If incidents on the South Side make you nervous, the city in general is probably not the place for you. Stuff can and does happen anywhere. Squirrel Hill, Shadyside, etc. You just have to be aware of your surroundings. But if you're really paranoid about it just leave with the crowds and stay on Carson as long as possible. And as a responsible gun owner who usually advocates preparation, I would concur that taking a Glock to the bar is not the greatest idea.

I got jumped on S.18th 4 years ago. It was just before midnight and I was walking from my car to East Carson to meet friends and some guy started following me. I was alone and although I am comfortable in the city environment and know how to carry myself that didn't stop him from attacking me.

The saddest part was when I was yelling for help people just walked past and laughed. They thought I was some stupid, drunk girl. It wasn't until I made it to Carson and found a cop (and my friends) that people realized what had happened. Needless to say, they never found the guy.

Just a cautionary tale...something like that could happen anywhere though. It definitely doesn't hurt to carry Mace or even your key in your fist when you walk. I wish I would've thought to do that at the time.

I still do go to the South Side on occassion but very rarely will I walk around down there by myself. Too many crazy drunks on the weekend.
