Impossible doesn't equal improbable. At no time did I say it was impossible. However, something that is improbable, I always toss out as a viable argument. And since it is improbable that it was northern lights, due to its rarity, any assertion that it was possible is not worth exploring further. Is it possible that aliens came from space as Squarian mentioned? Sure, anything is possible, it's possible I could win the powerball, but is it probable? Thus, I stand by my original claim. Furthermore, things that happen on occasion are not rare by its very definition.

Nice try. On the occasion that I smoke a cigar, I'll think of you.

Big green flashes in the sky are improbable too, as evidenced by their rarity.

Actually, it probably was the Northern Lights: SDO - Solar Dynamics Observatory | SDO Gallery

There actually was again some solar activity I think that could have upped the visibility of the aurora, but that was a few days ago or more. EDIT: Okay, maybe it was still that.

I was thinking this was lightning, filtered through some clouds funny giving it the odd color. I believe there were some storms around. And lightning isn't always accompanied by thunder, especially if you are far away from it.

Would otherwise say fireworks because there always seem to be fireworks during the summer, but 11:40pm on Sunday means, um, no.

I guess you don't watch the local news. Just a few nights ago, they said we might be able to see the Northern Lights because there was a huge disturbance recently.

There's a possibility to see the northern lights a few times a year here. What usually interfers with our seeing it is our cloud cover.

Don't believe me? Here's a local newspaper article about the northern lights in June: We might see northern lights here tonight

I have seen something very similar to what you describe on nights after heavy ice storms as the transformers blow up from ice knocking down power lines. Unlikely this was due to ice on the lines, but it still could have something to do with the transformers.

Well, Brian, I have good news and bad news.

The good news is that they're going to need a few lackeys to help run things.

The bad news is that they aren't interested in gondolas, and they're probably going to want a steel mill close to downtown...

Oh well. Time to join the Rebel Alliance, I guess.
