Default Commute to Shadyside/Oakland... best areas to live?

I am considering relocating to Pittsburgh for work and will be working in either Shadyside or Oakland. I currently live about an hour north of Pittsburgh, but would like to relocate ultimately. Ideally, I would like to live in the Cranberry/Mars area because of it's proximity to my hometown, but a friend told me that the commute to Oakland would be too difficult during rush hour. Is this true? Also, if it is true, what would my best options be? I'm not sure I wish to live within the city limits, and I desire a safe neighborhood where I'd be able to walk my dog without the fear of crime. I understand that the North Hills have some good areas, and have been told that the commute from Mt Lebanon or Dormont would be a possibility. Help!

Default consider Hampton Twp

You should try Hampton twp. Sounds like you have a family and hampton has a great school district. 20 minutes to Shadyside and Oakland. I happen to work for Maronda Homes in Hampton and could also show you some affordable new construction, some of which are immediately available.
