I am looking for a cell provider with smartphone/data in Pittsburgh that is cheaper than the big boys.

It seems like the only ones with decent phones are Virgin mobile and Cricket. Does anyone have experience with the quality of their service in the region?

I have Virgin Mobile, and I've never had any problem with it.

Virgin and Boost both use Sprint, so I would look at those two before Cricket.

They use Sprint's towers only, you can't roam onto Verizon like a post-paid Sprint user can.

And Cricket uses Verizon and/or Sprint as well as smaller providers, as well as their own towers, depending on the region.. their coverage map actually looks better overall...

I was mostly hoping for "real-world" observations.

I used to have Cricket a long time ago (now with Verizon.) I remember Cricket service wasn't available outside of Allegheny County. I'm not sure if that has changed or not.

Cricket has its own towers...and only provides Unlimited while "On Network" Sprint and Verizon roaming coverage is probably part of some "limited allotment"

I've been able to use my Virgin Mobile phone pretty much everywhere in the US that I've traveled (surprisingly I get zero bars at my Mom's house,) but I'm not sure how roaming works for a "real" phone.

They have some areas with roaming charges but they also have unlimited "Partner coverage" in areas they do. You can't be connected to Non-Cricket towers more than 50% of the time, but otherwise there isn't a limit. In other words, you can only have a Cricket account if you spend the majority of your time in a native Cricket zone.

I use straight talk and they are starting to get smart phones but you would have to check to see what they have now, but my service only costs 45 bucks and I get unlimited calls, texts and web so it is worth it, you have to watch which phone you get the some of their phones use ATT and others use Verizon towers my Samsung uses Verizon so I have no problems my brothers phone got ATT and he is complaining all the time about dropped calls and weak signals.he was surprised one day when I went with him and he lost his signal but I had all bars in this one spot, and he said he should've got my phone, the service I have been very satisfied and has been a good experience
