Need a job? These people are hiring 500. Also, Pittsburgh has raised one ranking every year since 2005 in largest exporting regions in the country.
Quote:
Riding on the tide of renewed interest in nuclear energy, the Holtec Manufacturing Division in Turtle Creek has expanded its plant and is hiring 500 in the next three to five years.
“It’s truly exciting to be part of a business that’s growing and exporting,” says Mark Ackerman, sales and marketing manager. “It’s the untold story of local commerce.”
So lets tell the story. Exports and manufacturing is emerging as a local bright spot in the midst of the flagging economy. Reports show that Pennsylvania’s durable goods manufacturing sector has stabilized the past few years. The Pittsburgh region also ranked as the 24th largest exporting area in the country, moving up from 27th place in 2005, sending almost $8.3 billion in goods worldwide, according to the U.S. Commerce Dept.

Need a job? These folks could be adding 3000 in the near future. Pittsburgh is a leading region in the country for creating alternative fuels and a testing city for GM.
Quote:
Pittsburgh-based Consus Ethanol plans to build at least two multi-million dollar ethanol plants powered by waste coal in southwestern Pennsylvania with the potential of creating 3,000 jobs in the region.
And if all goes as planned, three more ethanol plants may follow.
The company is in the permitting process for the construction of a second larger plant on a former tin mill site in Aliquippa. A $750 million project is planned for 60 acres in the Aliquippa Industrial Park, which will also include a power and carbon dioxide facility.
Both plants will manufacture “100 percent pure ethanol,” a corn blend that is blended with gasoline to produce a cleaner burning fuel for cars, explains Cranston. In addition, distiller’s grain used in cattle feed and liquid carbon dioxide used by the food industry will also be produced.

The technology sector in Pittsburgh is booming and hiring exponentially.
Quote:
A gathering of CEOs and local and state leaders assembled in the Innovation Works lobby on Technology Drive this month to celebrate the strength of its portfolio and announce new companies and hiring.
IW invested in its 100th company last year and attracted more than $100M in follow-on investment from private and other sources in 2007. Since its inception in late 1999, IW has invested more than $35M and its portfolio companies have gone on to raise $425M in follow-on financing.
“Pittsburgh was once a flyover for executives from other cities,” noted Rich Lunak, president and CEO of IW. “No more. Fifty-five out-of-town VC firms have invested in local companies in the last three years.” The phone is ringing as well as executives from cities like Cincinnati, Cleveland and St. Louis call to learn more about IW’s successful model for tech-based economic development.

Pittsburgh is getting an original soupman! Rejoice Seinfeld lovers!
Quote:
After galvanizing, and nourishing, New York City’s lunch scene, The Original SoupMan has landed Downtown. On Jan. 28, Pittsburgh's first Original SoupMan will welcome lunch crowds at 410 Forbes Ave.
“It’s become an icon through the Seinfeld show. It’s an excellent franchise group. It's the ideal niche market because Pittsburgh is a soup town,” says Keyser, whose shop is open Monday through Friday from 11 a.m. until 6 p.m. “We’re across the street from Macy’s in the Forbes garage. This seemed to be ideal.”

The new nightclub will be called Zen and will be located in the Freight House Shops in space once occupied by the Palm Bar and Crawford Grill. It will be run by the owners of Privilege Ultralounge in the Strip District and is expected to open in the spring.
It is billed as a luxurious multilevel upscale nightclub with an Asian theme, and imagery and decor from the Far East.
