I'd also vote for any development in Mt. Washington being kept on a human scale, architecturally consistent, and retaining historical housing stock wherever practical. Among other things, that is more in keeping with what young professionals want these days, and that is who I would think the target market would be.

Out with the old and in with new, Homewood is getting new development!

Ten new single-family homes will soon be under construction along the 7500 block of Susquehanna St., adjacent to Helen Faison Arts Academy in Homewood.

The 30-unit residential project will also bring new homes to Braddock Ave., Finance St. and N. Homewood Ave. Construction is expected to start in March. “There’s investment from the community. They’re getting rid of nuisance and abandoned properties. With the new school there, it’s a good complement.,” says David Howe with Pittsburgh Housing Development Corporation.

The three-bedroom homes will feature 2 1/2 bathrooms,
detached garages and front porches. Homes will sell for $128,000 and are expected to be competed by the fall of 2008. Architect is Homewood-based architect Marvin Miller; contractor is Mistick Construction.

Anyway, they are getting the second location of Dozen Cupcakes. I imagine this will be a fine idea considering the first location brought in 340,000 dollars last year. *BOING*

Dozen Cupcakes, the 700-square-foot shop in Pittsburgh's Squirrel Hill district, makes and sells one thing - cupcakes and sells them well.
So well in fact that Gray has decided to open a second store in the up and coming Butler Street area of nearby Lawrenceville.

Pittsburghers like their cupcakes. Dozen Cupcakes whipped up $340,000 in sales in 2007 and with the new larger space, Gray expects to bring in at least a million in revenue in 2008.

St. Casimir condo's in the southside passed the 50% occupancy rate. They are REALLY cool, having been converted from a former schoolhouse.

St. Casimir condos, housed in a turn-of-the century former schoolhouse on the South Side, now has nine of its 17 units sold.

The $1.5 million project at the corner of S. 22nd and Jane Sts.was converted into upscale lofts by New York City-based developer David Forbes. Lynne Bingham with Howard Hanna Real Estate Services says that two additional unit sales are pending.

Remaining units sell for $135,000 and $175,000. “The building has so many amenities,” says Bingham, citing the Romanesque Revival building’s barbecue deck, free guest suite, fitness facilities and twenty-four hour maintenance.

Some of this is old news, but here's a write-up on some of the stuff coming to Ross Park. On top of these announcements, they are also adding a 55,000-square-foot lifestyle center with at least one new restaurant and other undisclosed projects. Of course, Ross Park Mall itself will be getting the region's only Nordstrom's, Tiffany & Co, and will also be getting a White House Black Market and Steamers Coffee & Tea Company.

In October of 2008, Seattle-based Nordstrom, a leading fashion specialty retailer, will open a new two-level, 139,000-square-foot store in the mall. Specialty jeweler Tiffany & Co. will occupy a new 5,000-square-foot space adjacent to Nordstrom. The 1.2 million square-foot development will be the only area location for both high-end retailers.

“It was a long decision for Nordstrom—they looked for a while. They liked our redevelopment plan, merchandising and tenant mix, demographic, and location--the whole package. For years, Cranberry has been the fastest growing area in Western Pennsylvania, and that’s our primary trade area,” says Lisa Earl, with Ross Park Mall. “The only place they’ll have in the market is Ross Park Mall. It’s good for the entire market, helps the economy and expands our trade area.”

Another phase of 62 million dollars worth of development is about to start at the Southside Works. It consists of 3 main projects, one is a Hofbrauhaus German Restaurant (this is sort of neat that the SSW will have an Irish Pub, a German Restaurant, and a Tapas Bar), a 48 million dollar 4-star hotel, and the first phase of Southside Works Riverfront Park (which I believe will actually be a "green" park and not an "industrial" park). Also to note, Quantum Building III is under construction which will also be assimilated by American Eagle headquarters, and American Eagle has also reserved a position for a Quantum Building IV if the company continues to grow the way it is. No announcements have been made on officially requesting a fourth building, though.

The Hofbrauhaus, a German beer restaurant, will have 18,000 square feet and seating for 1,080. Expected to be open by year's end, it could attract up to 450,000 visitors annually, officials said.

The hotel, a 140-room facility to be built by development firm DOC-Economou, will include a business center and two-story ballroom. Also part of the complex will be 23 residential condominiums on the upper floors and 20,000 square feet of riverfront retail space.

The $11 million SouthShore Riverfront Park will be located between the Monongahela River bank and the Hofbrauhaus and is expected to take several years to complete.

$62 million SouthSide Works projects slated to start

This was already mentioned in another thread, but here is an article about how the CEO's of four major companies in Pittsburgh have pledged to use KLM Dutch Airlines if they set up a direct route to Amsterdam (which they have been talking about for a few months, now). The companies are Westinghouse Electric Co., Medrad Inc., Lanxess Corp. and Heinz Continental Europe. Maybe this will be the start of getting back direct European flights to Pittsburgh International. BTW, in case you're wondering, Pittsburgh International planes are able to fly across the ocean and to ANY city in Europe on one tank of fuel. Not every American city can do that, so there is no reason PIT shouldn't have international.

In meetings with KLM Royal Dutch Airlines' chief executive last week, the CEOs of four large Pittsburgh corporations pledged to book all of their locally originated travel to Europe on KLM/Northwest if the Dutch airline agreed to fly nonstop to Pittsburgh.

The full-corporate presses, which took place Jan. 28 and 29 in Amsterdam, were "the most positive we've had yet on flights to Europe with any airline," Allegheny County Chief Executive Dan Onorato said on Friday.

An executive from a fifth, soon-to-be-local corporation, Royal Philips Electronics, also met with KLM's CEO, he said. Philips, based in Amsterdam, has agreed to acquire Respironics Inc. of Murrysville in a $5.1 billion deal that should close in March.

This new shopping center/office space/hotel is going in at the border of East Liberty and Point Breeze, just up the street from Trader Joe's on Penn. It's just part of the rehabilitation efforts in East Liberty.
