Default Arena preservationists lose another battle

Feds, Sports Authority say no reason to stop arena demolition

This time the Federal Govt. Shot them down. I have conteneded since day one that it was coming down, so why delay it? Just to put your face in front of a camera or in the paper. The Cathedral of Learning is a beautiul building. The Union Trust Building is a beautiful building. Mellon Arena is not, and frankly hogs up too much prime space. Time to move on.

Maybe the preservationists can secede from the United States and form their own country where the old arena is. That'll prevent it from being demolished..

It has about as much architectural beauty as those apartment towers in East Liberty they imploded for the Target.

They are beating a dead horse. I still can't see the point in saving the building. These preservationists are wasting our tax money. They act like it's the Greek Coloseum.

I don't love the Civic Arena. I don't hate the Civic Arena. But no building besides the Cathedral of Learning says "Pittsburgh" to me the way the Civic Arena does.

My parents garage is more appealing to the eye than that arena

I actually kind of like the building in the abstract. But it has lost its purpose, can't really be used for another purpose, and is a huge impediment to properly redeveloping the Lower Hill, so it should go.

I whole-heartedly agree with this. My only hope is that preservationists shift their priorities from saving the building outright to possibly saving the roof pieces and steel superstructure and having them repurposed elsewhere. As a matter of fact, I believe I recall some well-to-do corporate firm in the suburbs wanting to do that.

If it's going to truly be lost, that sounds like a far better option than just lost to rubble.

I was stuck in traffic in front of the Arena a couple of days ago, affording me the opportunity to take in the individual squares that form the round silver shell. I was thinking maybe they could sell those one by one.
