I recently moved to Pittsburgh for work after graduating from school in Chicago and was just wondering if you guys had any tips on good resources to find apartments in Lawrenceville, Shadyside, Squirrel Hill, or the Southside since these neighborhoods sound like where it's at for younger people in Pittsburgh. Are there any local papers or postings not on the internet that might be helpful?

Thanks!

So do the exact opposite of what I've been doing haha. Thanks for the tip. I guess what I'd like to know is are there certain streets I should focus on? Butler and Walnut Streets seem to both have a lot going on. Are there any others that would be nice to live near?

For the southside these could help (yes i know its on the internet ha, but maybe not what you have come across):
The Healey Company - Apartment Rentals
Steel Town Properties - Real Estate - Pittsburgh, PA | Facebook

Anywhere in the southside flats would be great..... key word flats, I wouldnt recommend anything on the southside slopes.

Standard tips:

(1) Don't forget to check the Post Gazette;

(2) You can try driving around and writing down numbers;

(3) You can look on the websites of some of the more reputable management companies.

(3) has its downsides--even the best companies can be difficult about various things (like during move-out), and generally they charge on the high end for their places. But they do have a lot of places in their portfolios.

I wouldgowith CL. The Apartment Guide books seem to focus more on teh suburbs. The city apartments the do list are awfully expensive.

Nothing against the internet, I just started bumping into the same websites after a few days of searching. Property management websites have been really helpful and tend to have interesting listings you won't find on craigslist or similar websites. Are the Southside Flats the area where Carson Street is? Friends have been telling me to avoid actually living in the Southside in order to keep my car free from vomit... are they overblowing things?

Are there any streets in particular I should try driving down? I haven't explored Pittsburgh anywhere near as much as I would like to before deciding where to live on a more permanent basis (I'm in the North Side right now and don't think I want to stay here), so even advice that seems really obvious would be very much appreciated.

Thanks again.

Yes, Carson street is the main street that runs through the center of the flats. No, I wouldnt live right on Carson St. Fri & Saturday nights are like bourban street, a bit lively on thursday nights & not much so the rest of the week.
I may be biased, but I've lived in the southside for the past 4 years and think its great. Depends on what you're looking for. I prefer it for the large variety of quality restuarants, shops, bars, & other amenities all in an easily walkable and safe area.
As I said, the weekend can get wild, but as long as you're not directly on Carson st itself, you can avoid all that (but then again, its also easily available to you if you want to let loose a bit).
Not sure where you would be working at, but if its downtown, its easily walkable from the southside too which can be a huge plus.

I successfully used the ads in the South Pittsburgh Reporter for South Side apartments. I also used the City Paper.

Also, a lot of smaller landlords on the South Side may still use the traditional sign in the window method of advertising vacancies. Some certainly were a few years ago before I moved out of that neighborhood.

I'd have no problem living in the South Side Flats on a side street.

For driving around, you could try going back and forth on either side of Murray in Squirrel Hill. In Shadyside you might want to concentrate toward the eastern end (east of Aiken and in fact mostly east of Negley).
