I thought the same thing, but I just figured I'm an old fart... Although that's less than 3 undergrad students' tuition for one year, isn't it?

That says much more about you than it does about Guster.

They headlined a very well attended show at Stage AE in April.

I just did a YouTube search for Guster, and I came up with music videos that averaged only around 300,000 views. Yep, they sound like they were popular enough to be worth every bit of the $100,000 spent by CMU. I wonder how much it cost to bring Foster the People to Millvale? I'm assuming it wasn't more than $100,000, and they're a much more well-known band.

Guster has been around for years, and they play here often they played the Arts Fest 2 years ago (2 or 3 I can't recall exactly) Also, they are such a middle of road band. They aren't trendy or controversial they won't cause a huge uproar for any reason including popularity, political, socioeconomic stance. They are kind of popular with certain people but not to popular. Basically students and staff will watch the show and forget about it 20 minutes after they have finished their set and everyone will go back to their lives. Also, they are definately a band that would be available last notice.

There's no reason to get into a pissing contest about this since it's a pretty minor point and you so obviously have your finger on the pulse of the american music scene. I would only suggest that, as a general rule, bigger bands headline bigger venues and Mr. Smalls ain't Stage AE. FTP has had a nice year but I'm not sure why they're germane to the conversation; I'm sure that you do. WRCT probably had a hand in the the Guster recommend for CMU, they always did when I was an undergrad there, and generally they've made some good calls.

Oh, my. Even I, an aging baby boomer, have heard of Guster. Would Seth Cohen be college-age now?

Now that's a group I haven't heard of (but I am now listening to "Pumped Up Kicks").

EDIT: I like it. Thanks, P. Its catchy repetitiveness reminds me of "Let's Go Surfing" by the Drums: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6OsTUnkqSi4.
