Any bike commuters here?

Is there a bike sharing program in the works in Pittsburgh?

Bike Pittsburgh has in fact been exploring a bike sharing system, which had a demo earlier in the summer:

there's also free ride, which is a cheap way to get a decent bike (you can learn to build your own in exchange for volunteer time, cash, or a combination thereof, or just buy one that's been fixed up) and also learn how to take care of it.

Free Ride Pittsburgh

biking in pittsburgh is a little intimidating because of the hills, narrow streets, and drivers who aren't used to seeing bikes around. but it's been steadily getting better since i've moved here - lots more bike lanes & shared road markings, improved trails, and more bikes on the road.

That was the case in DC, until two years ago a concept called CapitalBike share was introduced to DC.

Its slowly changing how people view bikers in the city.

Hopefully something like that comes to PGH

I think the zipcar business model makes a lot more sense if applied to bicycles.

The problem with bike sharing is that it's fairly expensive to get started, and has never even operated on a break even basis anywhere in the world.

I don't think the demand is here yet to justify the cost.

How does a bike-sharing work exactly?

I commute by bike all the time. I would look on CL for a cheap older 10sp or whatever. The old bikes are fine. Or an old mountain bike. They work great for a commuter since they are tough. When you get a bike and know where you are living and working, let me know and I will help you with a good route. I know the city like the back of my hand.
