Wvu and tcu saved the big 12 which is now a big 4 conference
Had wvu joined the acc then the big 12 would have to have found another school with a proven bcs bowl win record to save themselves. If the big 12 did find another school the acc , along with wvu would have been screwed. If the big 12 couldn't find a replacement then they would have collapsed and the acc would have become a big 4 conference. In the latter case the acc would be a premier league. However at this point it doesn't matter.

This has got to be the longest lived thread I've ever started. :-)
Fsu and vt were also good before they joined the acc. In both cases the acc destroyed their football programs. However Pitt was mediocre before joining the acc so perhaps the mediocre football of the acc won't affect them.

WVU was not "rejected" by the ACC. They never made formal application, and that league decided to add only the two basketball centric programs that have largely put it in jeapardy of losing its status today. There is great resentment on the part of the football centric programs in that league of Tobacco Road and their basketball oriented policies. They actually harmed the already very weak posture of a conference that has only won 2 BCS games in its entire history by adding a Pitt team that has never won a single BCS game and has not had a relevant post season victory in 3 decades.

Pitt was rejected by the Big 12 because that conference does not desire affiliation with urban oriented schools and because Pitt rents their football facilities, which are not on campus. That said, most of us firmly believe Pitt has found their natural home. It will be interesting to see how they do when they are literally surrounded by far more affluent programs in every direction, using the 4th. coach in one years time.

The best thing that has happened is that West Virginia did not get stuck in that crap league. Pitt jumped the gun, and they are likely to pay dearly for it over time. It is only a matter of time before one of the ACC programs jumps ship, then the better football programs will be fighting with each other to be next out the door.

One afternoon a fox was walking through the forest and spotted a bunch of grapes hanging from over a lofty branch.

"Just the thing to quench my thirst," quoth he.

Taking a few steps back, the fox jumped and just missed the hanging grapes. Again the fox took a few paces back and tried to reach them but still failed.

Finally, giving up, the fox turned up his nose and said, "They're probably sour anyway," and proceeded to walk away.

Big 12 schools: 2 (Texas, Oklahoma)
The thing about you Pitt folks is you always want to refer to "history". Army won national
championships when Pitt won them. History means basically nothing. What counts is
RECENT history and media attractiveness to the football centric leagues, and football is
where you'll find the money. Pitt hasn't been relevant in so long their history is known as
a poor one. Tony Dorsett is a grandfather now.

How many of those ACC schools you mention have won a championship since they joined
that conference, and how many ACC schools won one while in that league in the past
decade. The ACC is ancient history. It has lost all relevance, and like the Big East it will
assume its rightful place at the bottom of the heap. They did get extremely lucky and get
two teams that didn't deserve to be there in BCS bowl games last year. Both were totally
destroyed by their competition. One of them lost in the worst loss ever suffered by a team
in a bowl game and the winner of that game was a team headed to the Big 12. The other
was blown out by a B1G team of questionable quality.

Pitt is quite affluent,as is evidenced by it's endowment of, $2.545 billion, compared to WVU's $406 million. No wonder WVU was out there selling degrees.

Apparently money doesn't get a school a good football program.

As opposed to never winning one or even being in contention to win one?

It certainly is something to be proud of, but what happened? The quality of Pitt football has really fallen and the account which sucks at football wont improve it.
