I am originally from Pittsburgh but have not live there for more than 30 years. I am African American and I need a safe place to live and for my 16 year old son to go to school. No ghetto neighborhoods please. My son is a high achiever and I would like him to remain that way. I was thinking about North Hills. Can someone give some other places to look.

It all depends on how much you want to spend on housing.

Your initial inclination to go to the North Hills has a lot to be said for it. North Allegheny is a top flight school district, and those with smaller budgets or want to live closer to Pittsburgh, might find Ross Township with its older homes to be a better choice.

If you don't have a lot to spend, you might also consider Sharpsburg part of the quality Fox Chapel district.

There are a lot of nice places to live in the Pittsburgh metro, including the North Hills which is actually a pretty big general area with many different sections. Without some idea of what you are looking for and what you can afford to spend, its hard to recommend in much detail.
