A month into the CMU and Pitt semesters is the PERFECT time to pave 5th Avenue in Oakland! I mean it's not like there was any time this summer when there are about 40,000 less people trying to get to Oakland each morning. Next week I suggest paving the inbound Squirrel Hill Tunnels, Forbes, and Penn concurrently. Or better yet, stick to what you do best and pave each others' driveways and alleys. Public works official OKs paving of his own street

There, I feel better now...

I'm still quite annoyed the ongoing bridge rehabilitation projects Downtown are a month behind schedule. There was just another major traffic back-up the other day.

I think local public works in general have no real sense of timing for some of their projects. I can't count the number of times I've seen Athens/Clarke County resurface a road and then cut it up three months later to fix a water or sewer line, which ruins the smoothness of the new road when they haphazardly patch it over at the end.

I swear that the city does this every year. "Oh look, the kids are back in Oakland, lets tear up Fifth or Forbes for three months."

This is no different then the apparent geniuses that run PENNDOT. Doing lane closures and resurfacing of Route 50 between Bridgeville and Heidelburg? Hey, that is also a perfect time timing to close two lanes of I79 in the Bridgeville area for the weekend. I'm sure those two actives taking place at the same time in the same exact area will not interfere with traffic what so ever.

These projects would get done alot faster if they worked 24hrs on them, but I find it very rare around here that road work takes place 'after hours'

It's a lot more dangerous to work construction jobs like that at night.

People tend to complain about the noise at night too. Indeed, that's why they're behind schedule on those bridges over 579 by the arena.

I tend to give them a little leniency, because I think road projects are more difficult in Pgh since they really can't just shut off a street for say, 2 days, and be done with it. The non-grid means assigning detours a mess; it's not like most other cities where they can just divert traffic over a block. That being said, doing anything at all in Oakland in Sept is all sorts of dumb.

There is no excuse for not working 24 hours on road projects. Can you imagine if a major disaster hit this area? We'd never recover from it, and we'd certainly wouldn't have efficiency of the Japanese:
