What about after school care? I know our district offers that at a cost.

You have to send written letter via certified mail. It should include: The date the letter was written, the name of your child, his grade, his birthdate, that you are requesting for him to be evaluated, your reasons why, and that you give permission for him to be evaluated. They are not bound by law to do anything until you have proof of requesting an evaluation and/or accomodations. That proof is certified mail. The person you send the letter to is the principal of the elementary school. You can CC the director of special ed.

You need to obtain the contact information for the special education parent support group for your district. The district is required by law to provide you with that information. It's time for you to learn how to work the system because the system will fight you the entire way. At least with autism spectrum, you have a fighting chance because most school districts take autism seriously.

As I said before, the school district will have to pay for him to attend a full day kindergarten if there isn't a full day program available and it is determined that he needs a full day for his special needs. Time to start learning the law. It's going to be an uphill battle for the next 13+ years (even longer since special education students have a right to education until they are 21.)

Not true. Her son is protected by law. She simply needs to learn how to ensure it's enforced.

OP, this is from the 2008-2009 school year, but the contact information at the bottom of the last page might help you connect with the special education parent's group:

http://www.mtlsd.org/district/stuff/...tte%209208.pdf

Contact the parent that is listed at the end, not the school district person.

If all else fails, could he attend 1/2 day kindergarten all day (i.e. go to both 1/2 day sessions)? Basically, stay for the afternoon class which does the same thing as the morning class? That way, he gets a double dose of learning?

The Montour school district in Robinson has full day Kindergarten and has been full day for about 5 years now. Burkett is a great school with very high scores and pretty good teachers. Here is a link:

http://www.montourschools.com/pages/Montour_SD

Just look under Our Schools at the top and scroll down to Burkett.

My son had PDD until Kindergarten and I understand your frustration. Do you have him involved with wraparound? All services here in PA are free and there are many to choose from. If you want any further help, send me a PM.

That's a strong indication that everything I suggested was right on target. They're not going to do anything unless they are forced.

Contact people in the special education parent support group so you can learn how to force the school district to do what it is required to do by law.

Are you sure about this? I, myself, am completely ignorant on the topic; however, it seems strange to me that the district needs to offer a full-day program to a child with special needs when a full-day program is not offered to any segment of the population.

In addition, is the IEP to which the OP is referring something that was drafted here in PA, or is it one from FL? If it is from the OP's old school district in Florida, I would imagine that if services referenced in the document that are not available in the current school district, then the current school district is not obliged to provide them.
