Using the NYT resource, it looks like WVU has a bigger fan base than BYU (BYU is the current #2, by a wide margin, after ND when it comes to independents). So it isn't a crazy idea, but probably not preferable.

Not sure how practical it is. That article suggests that the University of Georgia has 1.1 million fans and Georgia Tech 1.7 million. Believe me, to suggest that Georgia Tech has a bigger fan base than UGA is laughable. UGA has the Atlanta market.

West Virginia might be paying the price for its academics. Pitt's academics is solid and with its AAU membership, it could have gone to the Big Ten. WV's academics are even weak for the SEC. WV has no hope for the Big Ten. The only non-AAU team they'll take is Notre Dame. If the ACC is willing to give ND the same deal that the Big East does, all sports except football, they might get them. I'd like UConn in the ACC but Rutgers is rumored for the Big Ten.
