What is funny is I ride that trail from 43rd Street because it is part of a traffic free route into the city for me. I don't always use it, but pretty often. I have walked all the way from the city on the riverfront up to 40th Street. You can walk it, but it is hard to get out of there. I had to backtrack to find a way out and I ended up in private property. I think the trail looks doable, but there are parts that are going to be really hard. It will probably get done, but I don't think it will be a priority unless we get some mayor or someone that really wants to focus on that. Right now it seems dead.

This would be awesome to get done. I never rode bike too much until I moved out to Robinson and had the Montour Trail right in my back yard, but since then it's been great. Imagine riding from Freeport to DC using only trails. I hope this gets support and I think it will be used a lot.

Sticking on the trails subject, does the trail connect in the Waterfront yet?

This state approval is the first step. With the purchase of the Aspinwall Marina and that development, I would imagine this will start moving forward, but it will be an expensive proposition. The area from Millvale to Aspinwall is the "most challenging" segment, but the money probably will be raised to get this done. The enhancement to the region to be able to walk and cycle to the city of Pittsburgh from Aspinwall, would be huge for all in this area. I am speechless in hearing this news, but am able to type. I had no idea they were moving on this like they are. So far there has been 2.3 million dollars raise to buy the marina and a few hundred more thousand to develop it. Not sure of funds needed to connect to Millvale, but I hope to get that number and help anyway I can.

This is awesome news, but I'm not getting your link to work.

Personally, my pipe-dream project would be to have some sort of new bike access across the Glenwood Bridge, perhaps by using the existing sidewalk and just adding new ramps on either end. By doing this, there would be a connection from the South Side Trail to the Duck Hollow Trail which further connects to the Nine Mile Run Trail and (hopefully) a future trail that goes by Carrie Furnace to connect to Rankin/Braddock.

The Glenwood Bridge is a "missing link" of sorts in my mind and such a project would be wonderful.

Let's put a bicycle trail on the side of the river that needs a train and a train on the side of the river that citizens will never use. Reading yinz ideas is as useless as paying serious attention to ideas of 2-year olds.

Speaking of two year olds, if you know anything about these projects, you know they work around RR tracks and they are there to stay.

Sure.

Rt 28 is being enlarged and moving closer to the river from the 40th St. Bridge towards the city. The RR tracks had to be moved closer to the river due to this. That bridge that was build just north of the 31st St. Bridge for cyclists and walkers is a prime example and that is why that very expensive bridge was built. All the trails going north on the Allegheny have to work around all the RR tracks. They are high volume tracks for all the coal to get to Springdale that we burn and pollute everything for our plasma TV's and having every light on in the house every day all day. Sorry I had to throw that other stuff in there.

If a trail goes to Oakmont from the Highland Park Bridge, it will also have to work around the tracks. These are not rails to trails really, they are trails next to rails. Norfolk Southern HATES the cycle/walking people that want this stuff. HATE!!!! They will probably do everything in their power to stop any of it, but that is where money and powerful people hopefully will help smooth it over for the greater good of the communities involved.

Might as well tell you that the trail that goes down the Mon also deals with the RR Tracks. They are still there and will be there next to the trails.

You need to get out and walk some of these. They are really amazing and very enjoyable. Go on a cold day, so there aren't too many people. Yesterday the trails were FULL of people with lots of smiles. Probably the happiest people in the city use them.

The Allegheny Riverfront trail would also be part of a combined trail/rail corridor:

Allegheny Riverfront Green Boulevard

Quote:
The project, now known as the Allegheny Riverfront Green Boulevard, seeks to establish a rail-with-trail green boulevard that would accommodate existing Allegheny Valley Railroad freight along with regional passenger rail use.
