By the way, the Pittsburgh area actually does pretty well in terms of economic impact from visitors (about 2/3rds as much as Philly, which is not bad when you consider the relative sizes and locations of Pittsburgh and Philly). See the report here:

Economic Impact of Travel Report | visitPA

And that figure had been growing robustly in 2007 and 2008, until the recession hit in 2009--and even then we were only back down to 2007 levels in 2009.

What would be some of your favorite aspects of the city? Never bad in my opinion to know the hidden gems of your own city (I sometimes feel that I overlook them myself )

Rust Belt Chic has its appeal and Pittsburgh has some great museums and other things tourists can enjoy but... Pittsburgh as a tourist mecca? I'm having a hard time seeing it. Don't get me wrong, you guys know I enjoy visiting Pittsburgh, and I love to recommend it to people who live within a day's drive. It's a cool town if you like architecture (or pierogis ). But let's be realistic--putting in on a par with San Francisco or Lisbon as a tourist destination is a bit of a stretch.
A name change might help. San Francisco Atlanta New York Charlotte Chicago ... Pittsburgh

Gobs of New York songs. Philly has an Elton John song "Philadelphia Freedom". Chicago has an entire musical. Cincinnati fits in a good song for that old "WKRP in Cincinnati" show. Even Cleveland's got "Cleveland Rocks" which was further "promoted" by the "Drew Carey Show".

Pittsburgh could use a song. There have been some publicized efforts but none have caught on. The only good song I can think of that mentions Pittsburgh is Talking Heads' "Life During Wartime".

Songs that mention Pittsburgh

Edit: Oh, and Black and Yellow may not be to everyone's taste, but it was a huge hit:

Pittsburgh is never mentioned. The closest reference is "Black and Yellow" Nothing else even hints at Pittsburgh.

There is an old episode of "Pinky and the Brain" where they try to gain control of Pittsburgh for its steel mills...which perpetuates the myth that Pittsburgh is steel mills. And they even have a song about it but unfortunately, all I can find is a german version on youtube.

Great...an anthem for Pittsburgh with esoteric lyrics. It even has the color wrong, it's gold not yellow.

It should be at least unmistakable

The song "Fins" by Jimmy Buffet also mentions Cincinnati. "She came down from Cincinnati. Took her three days on the train"

There is a Chuck Berry song that mentions Pittsburgh.
