Time to create a forum for snow amounts for this winter:
Just on the heals of local tv forecasters predicting a cold and snowy winter, we now have our first 'Winter Storm Warning' of the season issued from the NWS for areas east of the city and of course in the higher elevations of the mountains for friday night and into Saturday. I do recall one holloween when several inches of snow fell, but certainly not the norm. Is this the start to a whale of a winter ??

7" of snow on October 31, 1993.

The winter of 1993-1994 was historic. Pittsburgh received 76.8" of snow that winter, which is the fourth-snowiest winter on record. (It was the third-snowiest on record until the winter of 2009-2010 surpassed it with 77.4" of snow.) It was also a very cold winter. January 1994 is the eighth-coldest January on record, and January 19, 1994 is unquestionably the coldest day ever observed in Pittsburgh. It set records for the coldest maximum temperature ever (-3), the coldest daily average temperature ever (-13), and the coldest temperature ever (-22). Pittsburgh also set a record for the longest duration of temperatures zero or colder, with 52 consecutive hours from 6AM January 18 to 10AM January 20. The old record was 51 consecutive hours in 1983, from 6AM December 24 to 9AM December 26. (Coldest Christmas ever?)

Those statistics are disturbing. I remember that winter, though I was living on the other side of the state at the time. School was cancelled a lot that year, haha.

The winters of 1992-1993 and 1993-1994 were among the big highlights of my childhood. I was in eighth grade in 1992-1993, and all the snow days plus a one-week teacher's strike meant that I was in school until June 30. In ninth grade I transferred to a private school, so there were no make-up days in spite of all the snow we got in 1993-1994.

It was my sisters birthday (halloween) and I was home from school. I will never forget it. She cried because her 14th birthday party was ruined.

Bring it!

I'd much rather have snow than rain.

Heh, that was my 15th birthday, and I enjoyed it! I built a snowwitch in the front yard with green food coloring!
