Default Corning

Anyone ever corn growing up as a kid? It's so funny.....when I was younger, I thought everyone corned houses around Halloween when they were kids. It wasn't until recently that I learned that it's a PA thing.

I think it's awesome though. I used to have so much fun doing it. The best was when the people who couldn't take a joke would chase us, then tire after a quarter of a mile or so. Good times.

There was some discussion of it in this thread: Halloween in Pittsburgh

I have never heard of corning until this year, but I grew up in an area that wasn't very agricultural, so I guess we didn't have any corn to throw.

Yeah, corning. I was in Eastern OH though, but I guess that's close enough to PA.

Throwing corn as a kid was the "tricks" part of "trick or treat" We used to do it during the last few weeks in October leading up to Halloween. The object was to throw the corn at the windows so it would make a loud noise showering against the glass, and then run like hell. You wanted to use enough corn to leave a layer of it on the front porch so it made it tricky to walk on. We even gathered bags of acorns and would throw those too, so it was like walking on a layer of marbles, making it difficult not to slide and fall.

"Soaping" windows was an activity often done in conjunction with throwing corn. This was basically harmless fun and still much easier to clean up than the paint that graffiti vandals use today. Still, when I think back about what we did as kids I realize now how grateful I am that no elderly person slipped and fell on the acorns and that none of us kids in the neighborhood got seriously hurt or killed while we were doing it.

This was back in the '70s, so I was surprised to hear about the teen in Latrobe who got killed while he was running while they were throwing corn. I didn't realize that kids are still doing it today. How tragic. I hope his family and friends are doing OK.

The 17 year old that killed him is his older brother's best friend... tragic for BOTH families.

Crazy tragic events seem to befall that area constantly. I think the whole Derry-Latrobe-Blairsville area is truly cursed.

I've lived here for 12 years and I've never heard of it before today. I'm guessing it has something to do with yinzers inserting ears of corn in each other?
