I choose the Old Post Office on Smithfield (demolished in the 1960s):

I can't find a picture of it, but there was a large Greek Revival church located at the corner of Smithfield and Seventh Ave., that was torn down in the 1960's, and replaced with maybe the ugliest office building in Pittsburgh. The North Side Market House also comes to mind.

I think it was a mistake to tear down Jenkins Arcade.

When I saw the thread title I immediately had the same answer as the OP--the old Post Office. It would have been a major landmark that would have tied together that section of Downtown, and it could have been a functional building (lots of possible uses given the configuration).

No brainer for me. The Civic Arena. A structure like no other in the world, when opened it had a view of the city while watching concerts and other venues. Truly a marvel of architecture and no doubt would be something tourists would want to see as Pittsburgh becomes a tourist town over the next decades. Sure would have been amazing to see sporting events under the stars. Great thread!

The Allegheny Market House but that has more to do with the loss of the Allegheny Center street grid than the architectural merit of the market house.

Jenkins Arcade or Syria Mosque among buildings I remember, but that old Post Office sure was a looker. What stands there now?

does chinatown count as a landmark? what a massive mistake it was to turn that into a highway onramp. they've tried to do similar things to philly's chinatown in recent years, which kind of blows my mind.
