The problem with removing the building is that nobody can locate the property owner. It would cost into the hundreds of thousands of dollars to remove that building. In the financial state that the town is in, that just isn't going to happen. Similarly, security would cost money. Who would pick up the tab on that? I am sure the police look at it as they drive by, but beyond that, there isn't much that can be done.

Default the Tower

I was talking to my friend and he said a few years ago they wanted people to look at the structure of the tower to determine how sturdy it is. Did anyone else hear about? Does anyone really think the tower could collapse?

It wouldn't totally shock me if it did. They've had several fires in there. Plus, many windows are smashed out and there is a ton of damage inside from vandals. I assume that once they couldn't find any drugs they simply ripped out every bit of wiring from the building that they could. Plus, there is probably a decent amount of water leakage inside from the broken windows, and maybe roof damage. I'd say that it's a possibility, yeah.

I don't know about a major structural failure but the facade is definitely showing signs of buckling especially on the side facing towards Jeannette. Large strips of the facade have fallen away, leaving nothing but bare concrete behind it.

I dont think there is any danger of collapse. The building is constructed of steel, concrete and brick. Unless people start setting explosives off inside, it will probably stand for decades.

Default open door

I drove past Monsour the other day and a side door over by where you come up from Jeannette (across from the parking lot) was wide open so obviously people are in and out of that place pretty regularly.

People are definitely in there on an occasional basis, how regularly I don't know. Cops do drive by there at times but unless there's any suspicious activity going on like noises or so forth, they aren't going to go inside to check for any trespassers.

Hi. I hope you don't mind me sharing this here. I'm a photographer in the Philly area, and recently my wife and I took a 3 day road trip to western PA. I love shooting old and abandoned places in my spare time, and the Jeannette MMC was on my list of abandoned buildings to photograph. I didn't expect it to be wide open from front yo back. It was, so I did a shoot of the inside as much as I could handle. It's beyond creepy in there, and I think it shows in the photos.
If your interested, here is my set on Flickr:

Wow.

It's been quite a while since I've been past there, although I used to pass there quite a bit, while it was still open.

I'm not a neat freak, by any stretch of the imagination, nor squeamish about a little dirt, but just looking at that set of photos makes me want to go take a good hot shower and scrub real good. Yuuuck.
