Port Authority braces for another slash to service
35% reduction possible if funding doesn't increase

Tuesday, November 29, 2011
By Jon Schmitz, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

The Port Authority has begun preparing for service cuts that are more than twice the size of the reductions that took effect in March, when thousands of riders were stranded and others jammed into overcrowded buses.

CEO Steve Bland told the authority board last week that planning has begun for a 35 percent reduction in service hours that will come next fall if Gov. Tom Corbett and the Legislature fail to act on a statewide transportation funding shortfall.

Mr. Bland said the cuts would include elimination of 30 to 40 of the remaining 98 bus routes
That's pretty much the gist of things. Pittsburgh will soon have little to no public transportation. Hope you new folks who just moved here and went for that "most livable city" thing have a car. Oh hey, don't forget our high insurance, awful road maintenance, lack of proper snow removal, and shorter shelf life of automobiles here. Enjoy!

Auto insurance is actually pretty cheap here in my experience anyways. Yes to the other points.

And don't forget that highway congestion in this city is already bad for a city Pittsburgh's size...

When is enough, enough. This is utterly ridiculous.

What is most frustrating to me is that just one politician is standing in the way of a resolution. Of course he is enabled by the members of his party who won't act without his support, but the fact is that they are ready to do something, and he is refusing.

Ridiculous. Is there a vocal advocacy group out there that is spearheading some kind of effort to get progress made on this thing? It doesn't seem like anyone is really doing anything about it. At least, if they are they're not making enough noise.

On one of my visits to Pittsburgh, I stayed at the Courtyard Marriott downtown. Walking around on a Thursday afternoon around 3 in the afternoon, I was amazed and surprised at how terrible the traffic was. It was equivalent to what you would see in larger cities.

i still find it ridiculous that city council (yes I know PAT is county) has not said one word about it. They want people to come to teh city. How are they going to do so without bus service? We don't have cab service.

Pittsburgh is becoming more of an embarrassment because of this and our politicians.

We did have Save Our Transit and I think one other group. I have no idea what happened to them though. Maybe they moved to a city where the bus service is better.

What do you suggest City Council do about this?
