It's not from Pittsburgh, but I always hear people raving about Great Lakes Christmas Ale.

I bought a 6er of it 2 years ago at Christmas. It was good with a cherry taste. Started thinking "man, I am really getting drunk!" Never would have realized it was a barely wine.
Mad Elf's alcohol content is 11%, so it will affect you more than an average beer. As you say, its alcohol content is similar to wine.

That is a great beer and Great Lakes consistently puts out great stuff. It has a nice piney hop bite to it while being backed up with malt flavor. It reminds me of Sierra Nevada's Celebration Ale but slightly less hoppy.

Also, if anyone is looking for what beers they should seek out for the holidays this is always a good place to start:

Winter Warmer - BeerAdvocate

Great Lakes has a hoppy style that some love and some don't. There are several beer makers that are hop oriented. Locally we have East End, that likes to brew hoppy beer. I am not a big fan of them, but some people really love them, so I won't say it isn't good, it is just not my favorite style of beer.

I hate the Great Lakes Christmas Ale. It's like drinking a snickerdoodle.

I still have 5 of them in my fridge from last year. In fact, I think they're the only thing in there other than a box of baking soda.

Mmmmm, liquid snickerdoodle.

Also, Anchor Brewery makes a really good winter warmer. They tweak it every year to make it different as well.

I like snickerdoodles! I just don't dig the GLCA. I really like Anchor, so perhaps I'll give theirs a try.

Why would you keep beer in the fridge for a year? It's probably no good by now. It's not bourbon, most beer is meant to be drunk fresh.
