One of the things I love about winter holiday beers is there are many different approaches brewers can take, and there is a huge variety in this year's local offerings.

Last year Penn Brewery had their St. Nikolaus Bock - Brewer's Reserve in 22 oz. bombers in gift packaging for like 12 bucks or something at the brewery. It made a nice gift for myself and a few others.

Festivus isn't too shabby, a bit light for a "winter warmer" but still flavorful. Snow Melt Winter Ale is great, I try to get a growler every year. I haven't had the Pecan Ale from Beaver County Brewing but I haven't been impressed with anything they've put out. St. Nikolaus Bock is always good whether or not you get the standard one of the Brewer's Reserve.

I have half a grower of East End's Snow Melt in my 'fridge right now. Wondrous stuff.

It isn't local Pittsburgh, but a Pennsylvanian beer; Troegs Mad Elf is one that I always remember.

I bought a 6er of it 2 years ago at Christmas. It was good with a cherry taste. Started thinking "man, I am really getting drunk!" Never would have realized it was a barely wine.

Yeah, St Nicholas Bock is probably my favorite Penn beer--wish they always made it.

I have a 6 pack that I've been aging for 3 years or so in the cellar. I'm going to have to break one of those out this year (or maybe the entire 6'er).

My favorite winter warmer of all is Anderson Valley's Winter Solstice. Just smooth, malty goodness in a bottle.

Be prepared to pay for it this year. Penn Brewery cut production way down this season and then pre-sold a lot of it to bars. I saw a single case of it yesterday and it was priced at $38.00. Boooooo!

I only buy alcohol around the holidays, usually rum and a case of beer...I am looking for something different this year, what kind of beer is much like samual adams but better? Want to try something different! I am not a huge fan of alcohol the rest of the year...just mostly the month of december...cause its the most difficult month of the year for me, for so many reasons;( lol! Beer helps!
