I haven't visited Altoona yet, but it's next on my list of cities in PA that I intend to visit. I'm really fascinated by PA's small cities.

Crime statistics for Uniontown can be found on the city-data site here: http://www.city-data.com/city/Uniont...nsylvania.html

As you will be able to see, the statistics are comparable to the US average crime index. Uniontown hasn't had a homicide since 2002.

I guess you'd have to spend the first 18 years of your life there to know for sure, like I did.

Nice pics though
I will agree completely on the redneck comment although Uniontown is getting better than it has been in years (although I see much of the improvement going on outside of downtown.) I would say that it is a lot safer than many neighborhoods in Pittsburgh to put it in perspective.

I played golf at Uniontown Country Club once. Pleasant little working man's club. The surrounding residential areas seemed very pleasant too. Quite a few well-kept Victorians in the southern limits of Uniontown proper, along with some gorgeous, custom-built mid-century modern homes overlooking the course from Leith-Hatfield.

I think it's healthy for people to move around the country for a while, and I feel blessed that I've been able to do it. No matter where you live, if you stay in one place for too long, things start to get boring and often times people start hating on their hometowns. It's just human nature.

I agree with you that moving around is good. Things can get a little stale in one place. I am one of those people who likes a change of scenery every few years, and I may try another city someday. It's an exciting adventure to start fresh. '

Before I moved to Pittsburgh from Michigan, back in 2007-2008, I was also considering Butte, Montana, and Savannah, Georgia. But now that I've discovered the wonders of PA, I think I can satisfy my nomadic tendency someday by moving to the different cities within the state, or at least traveling to them. There are so many, and they are all unique.

Altoona looks kind of neat from I-99, from what I remember.

Speaking of Franklin, have you been? Beautiful downtown!

I need to visit Uniontown, I love small towns! However, it should not be downplayed that Uniontown does have a huge meth problem. Just take a look at all the rehab centers there for a town of that size.

Anyway, I love visiting small towns. Franklin, Foxburg, Clarion, Oil City, Emlenton, and Titusville are all worth checking out. Oil City blows my mind, especially for a nerd like me who loves dystopian future fiction. The last time I was there I saw a huge 4 story parking garage completely empty. Also, there's beautiful Victorian houses all over the place to check out as well.
