A Yinzer is someone who thought it was Mike Wallace the Pittsburgh Steeler who died Saturday, instead of Mike Wallace the esteemed reporter.

Most people think that Pittsburghers are nothing but fat, chain-smoking white people anyway, so yeah, I guess they were included.

What a fascinating thread.

I think of a yinzer as a native (preferably with the accent) who will never feel as home anywhere else as in SWPA.

FWIW I only pretend to like the steelers and I really don't understand football at all. I can follow baseball and hockey but I just do not understand football.

I don't smoke, let alone chain smoke, but I never say no to free beer.

Hell, I'm all of the above and I've pissed in a parking lot. And I've only been here 10 years

In Boston, we had Southies (picture Affleck in "Good Will Hunting"). I'd say that the difference (in the broadest offensive generalization I can think of) is that the Southie has a streak of racism and homophobia, but otherwise doesn't care about impeding progress and is actually for it (as long as it doesn't include modernizing Fenway). And when one of them breaks out of South Boston to try and achieve something, they're congratulated on doing so.

My impression is that the Yinzer is more parochial. Progress will never be as good as the past. There's not much in the way of intellectual curiosity nor interest in see or doing anything outside of Pittsburgh, even though they'll prattle on about the city going to hell in a handbasket, given the chance. As long as you're one of them, it probably doesn't matter that much what your race or religion is.

I don't think there's a specific yinzer look, behavior or necessarily even a language beyond accent. It's more a world-view, IMO.

That's just my opinion gained over the past decade living here. YMMV.

When I moved back here a decade ago, I couldn't help but notice how many white adults smoked cigarettes.
