The thing about retring to a warm weather climate is that seniors tend to be healthier and live longer because they can get outside more. Many of the seniors that I see when I go to Hollywood, Fl look terrific because they walk up and down that boardwalk every day and also get healthy doses of sunshine. I guess you can always ger silver sneakers for a gym menbership as a senior. It just seems that the senior communities in Florida have perfected the needs of retirees over the years. Warm weather is also better for arthritiis and other aches and pains.

I agree! If retirees have enough money, Pittsburgh would be a great place to live for 6 months out of the year and live in Florida the other half. In fact, many do that. I think Pittsburgh summers are more ideal because they are not as hot and humid as Florida's, thus allowing seniors to enjoy the warm weather without the major risks associated with heat. There's also lots of sunny days. The same can be said about Florida winters... What senior citizen wants to live in cold, icy, snowy, gloom?

It is almost like those statistics saying we get sunshine a decent percentage of the time even in winter are accurate . . . .
The statistics suggest our winters are almost sunshine-FREE. I just pretend our sunny winter days are like holidays because they don't happen every day or every other day... barely once or twice a week at best.

Hope you enjoyed the sun. It was cloudy in Scranton today .

Uruguay is the place to go right now. Invest now before it becomes everyone else's retirement hot spot!

No, they say we get around 30-40% possible sunshine from mid-November through February.

But anyway . . .

I'm not sure there is any one foreign country we would want to settle in, but I could see us using Pittsburgh as a home base while travelling a lot.

Right now, for affordable housing and sunshine...it would be Las Vegas. Plus Nevada has no income tax.

Yeah, but in comparison to Uruguay Vegas prices are astronomical. Plus there's that whole crime and Lake Mead drying up thing.

One of the uncertainties about retiring in Pittsburgh is the school tax problem. The unsustainable salaries that will no doubt lead to a PAT bus situation is the biggest concern. Where will that money come from? More taxes on people's homes? Retirees are on fixed incomes. Do you expect them to go back to work at the age of 75? Maybe work an extra job to pay the school tax?
