Should We Buy in North or South Hills??
My wife and I recently moved to Washington PA from Northern NJ as my wife's family is from the Bridgeville area. Currently I'm working downtown so I have to drive from Washington to South Hills Village and then pick up the "T".
We are looking for an affordable housing I.E. $175-$225K 4 bdrm with decent size lots for the dogs to run, low taxes and NO FLOODING!!!!. Basically I don't want to look out my window and watch my neighbors tv.
So we are looking at both the South Hills I.E. Upper St. Claire, Bethel Park, McMurray & Castle Shannon due to being close to the "T". we've been told Dormont and Brentwood are not the most desirable area's.
I am not married to the idea of the "T" and will gladly take a bus (as long as I don't have to transfer) or dirve as long as I don;t have to deal with those damn tunnels. I am told that the commute from the North Hills is easier, however I don't know what towns exactly make up the North Hills and how will the construction of the new casino affect the commute?
From what I have read and seen I should stay far away from Millvale & Coraopolis, what are the towns in the North Hills that are Nice, DON'T FLOOD
and I can commute to in 20-30 mins (rush hr time) or hop a bus without transferring that we should look at? Thanks for the help

Ross Township, West View, and McCandless are all near north suburbs that fit your bill. I don't think the casino will affect the commute time much, if at all.
As for Brentwood, I would say it is very inconvenient since you have to go on 88 and 51 to get out of there, and those roads are constantly clogged. Dormont is a fine area, IMO, but too crowded for what you want.

We lived in Bethel Park and hubby to the T at the trolley stop or the village. Affordable housing, great school district, and a great community! We plan on living there when we move back in 3 years!

So saddened that Pgh has stooped to building a casino.....bringing gambling in for the working class/struggling poor/financially depressed Pghers sounds like a real good option....
Plus, it's a big negative for people thinking of relocating there....it gives the Berg a more trashy and low-class image, imo

Hm... Beth Ann I think you are very misinformed about Pittsburgh, and that might be one of your biggest problems. Pittsburgh's economy isn't growing by leaps and bounds at the moment, but we are far from a struggling/finally depressed city. LOL. There is a great deal of wealth in Pittsburgh, and in fact, the world of retail in Pittsburgh is doing phenomenally well during a time when retail sucks all across the country. People must have money somewhere here. The Pittsburgh retail market is hot right now, downtown living has exploded, and the housing woes of the country has largely left Pittsburgh unscathed. We are extremely stable. Are there problems? Absolutely. Does every city have problems? Uh- yeah.

I think Shaler would fit what you are looking for. It is a nice area and within that time limit from Downtown. Lots of nices houses with a lot of character.
