Man, it's hard form 600 miles away but I'm trying to learn.

West Mifflin seems to border everything in the South suburb area. West Mifflin, Pennsylvania - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
West Mifflin is the red on the second diagram. You see it's a very irregular shape. McKeepsort is just across the river from a bit of West Mifflin....but you also have Dravosburg and a bit of Duquesne.

I can see that.
In fact, I almost said that Kennywood is "technically" in West Mifflin, but kind of feels like its own little place in the world.

West Mifflin is so big that it borders alot of rough neighborhoods and also alot of nice ones. You don't want to live near kennywood unless right in a one block radius from the park because like suzeeq said "kennywood feels like its own world" and that section of west mifflin is surrounded by Homestead, Whitker, Braddock, and Duquense all tough neiborhoods. The other side of west mifflin which is the bigger side is a really nice neighborhood with lots of things to do and is sorrounded by nice neighborhoods like Bethel Park, South Park, South Hills, Baldwin, Castle Shanon and etc. The Kennywood side of west mifflin is so far from the core of west mifflin that there are still alot of pittsburghers that don't know kennywood is in west mifflin, they think it is part of duquense. If you look at a map and see the difference in distance and how much stuff is between Kennywood Park and Century Three Mall then you will see how though it is one neighborhood technically it seems as two different ones.

This is just my opinion because I’ve been out of town.
In all honesty I think you will be fine. I lived on that street for years as a child. I still drive through there. It’s very run down and doesn’t look much different than I lived there. I don’t think race is going to make you unsafe but relatively speaking it's a bad part of town. IMPORTANT, check to see who your immediate neighbors are. Have a conversation with them. I’m sure they will give you some insight. If you decide to move in; just use common sense and be friendly but not let everyone into your business.
I’m not so sure about raising a family there and if you have a decent car I don’t think you are going to want to park it on the street.
I miss the architecture.

The big problem you have in a place like Homewood is this; there are a lot of great, salt of the earth types living there. Unfortunately, they aren't the ones you have to fear. The main things you have to fear are the thugs, and the fiends. The fiends, for the most part, won't bother you unless you are a young male, but you do have to worry about getting caught in the middle of the sporadic street violence. To me, the bigger worry would be the large number of addicts that hang around. These are the folks that will break into your house, and who will rob you. Housing is so affordable in Pittsburgh, that there is just no reason for you to move there.

As if you haven't seen this enough, stay away from Homewood....it's like Pittsburgh's version of Iraq nowadays, probably the most gang infested area in the whole city outside of maybe the Hill and parts of Garfield. I mean the place you're referring to is literally one of the most dangerous streets in the entire PGH area.

Garfield doesn't remotely come close to Homewood as a bad area. Garfield is rough, but Homewood is at a different level.

Shot in the Back
Yeah, some guy got shot in the back there last night after he was robbed by like seven people.
The archives center I work at is right between Homewood and Wilkinsburg, and I guess they used to have cars stolen out there and prostitutes around.
It's really pathetic that there are communities like that in America. You can whine about how it's society's fault and all of that crap, but it really does disgust me that people behave like that.

You've obviously not been in Garfield Heights back on Mossfield street. Driving along Penn Ave in Garfield or even the streets a block away from Penn aren't that bad, but once you get deep enough into Garfield it's basically the same as Homewood. Same with the Hill, or Larimer, or parts of Wilkinsburg. Yes, Homewood is probably the worst, but to say the other areas "arent remotely close" to being as dangerous is just flat out wrong. You mean to tell me you would drive thru Garfield Heights at night and feel safe? Or down Larimer Avenue?
