Oakland CA is a very mixed city, and we're all fine with that. I've got a black family living on one side of me and a white guy on the other side and Mexicans across the street (They fly the Mexican Flag on holidays, so I know they are Mexican, otherwise I'd say Latino) and Asians down the street from them.
And to me all these people are Bettie and Ray, Bill, and Carlos...
What matters to us is that we share a neighborhood....
Oh yeah -- we're the white crazy cat people....
Now, the next question is how do you get to a point where it doesn't matter what people look like, only that they take care of their property.... that I don't know. I know when we moved in we were welcomed, because they were all so glad to get rid of the crazy guy and his crazier mother who called the cops all the time.

As a black person, I don't care what your skin color is as long as you take care of your property and don't mess with mine!

Hey richlady--I like the passion you're expressing for Wilkinsburg & Homewood...
You stated you and your husband can see what is coming to Homewood in the future, if I can borrow that crystal ball for awhile, that would be great...IMO...If you put alot of money in play in those areas, you'll have to change your name to poorlady

Hello, Well first let me say yes and no.
Yes, it can be dangerous and yes other whites live there. I think you'd have more problems if you were black moving there then white. Just because most inner-city blacks are more scared of Whites and, have no issue messing with other Black people.
No, because they are trying to redevelop the area and around the Co-op ( similar to Whole Foods) there are alot of nice homes. I wouldn't move to Homewood though. Nothing to do with it being white or black ( because it is both). It's just not very safe. Try Shadyside instead. Good Luck!

Is the area that the co-op in considered Homewood? I had no idea. Do you think it's unsafe to go there and to that recycling place? We'd gone there before with no problem but I didn't realize it was in a truly dangerous area.

We bought our Christmas tree there. That area seems to be just fine, it's actually still considered Point Breeze in that area.

The co-op and Construction Junction are in North Point Breeze. Homewood doesn't start until you cross the railroad tracks to the north. I live in N. Point Breeze, about 5-6 blocks from the co-op, and it's fine. We've been living here about 9 months now, and haven't experienced any crime. My neighbors seem basically normal and nice except for one old creepy white guy.
