I know this is old but, New Castle along with Johnstown and other Western PA towns have a lot of potential. I think that New Castle is somewhat close enough to Pittsburgh to benefit.

I agree completely. Give it another 10 years, New Castle may turn around.

If both Pittsburgh and Cleveland come back strong, New Castle (along with Youngstown) are in perfect positions to benefit economically compared to areas more out of the way such as Altoona

As long as good paying manual labor jobs are out of this country, those areas will never turn around.

Because people living in the area between Westminster, YSU, Slippery Rock, Grove City and Geneva Colleges would only be able to work manual labor jobs...

New Castle can't depend on those kinds of jobs. If it can get some, wonderful, but it needs to attract other sectors for growth.

Copa's right. The region has nothing to attract new business with. All they've got here for a workforce is elderly or welfare recipients. The people with the tech training and the money and the brains went elsewhere because there were no opportunities here. Modern manufacturing can't use any drug dealers, drunks, mommy-homemakers, or broken-down mill retirees. Modern wants modern, in thinking, interests, vocational skills, and lifestyle.

The nexus of growth in the region has shifted from the Beaver-Shenango-Mahoning River valleys to the I-79 corridor: Slippery Rock, Grove City, Jackson Township, Zelienople, Portersville and Cranberry Township. It might be the fastest growing portion of the Pittsburgh Metro.

Google "Marcellus Shale". And then google "Shell cracker plant pennsylvania". Lawrence County is poised to greatly benefit from the natural gas drilling deposits in the area. Royal Dutch Shell is in the process of vetting the location in Beaver County which will result in THOUSANDS of contruction jobs and permanent high-paying jobs at the plant. Not to mention the ancillary jobs/businesses that will be created.
