Found a nice house on Ingram Ave., but don't know much about the area. Anyone know anything about the area that could help with our decision???

It's a nice enough area, good neighborhood with solid turn-of-the-century houses and what-not, but IIRC Ingram is kind of a busy road with lots of shopping centers and even some light industrial facilities nearby. So, traffic and associated noise might be something to consider. For me the biggest problem would be living that close to The Sharp Edge Creekhouse. That would be awfully hard on my wallet.

Completely depends on where on Ingram Ave. Ingram Ave. in Crafton (near the Sharp Edge as Drover explains above) is fine. Ingram Ave. in Ingram is quickly becomming an outright ghetto. It is one of the more dangerous areas near the city. If you're looking into that area I'd stay more toward Crafton, less toward Sheredan, and completely away from Ingram.

whoa!!! I live on Ingram Ave...ghetto? Are you kidding?
While I won't give out my adrs, I live in the 100's of Ingram Ave...near the shopping center. I can think of 1 house for sale near me...its cute. A little overpriced if you ask me, but you can always haggle. It looks as though it has been fixed up recently, which is a plus for Ingram- most of the houses are old and not updated. I do have some advice- do not use the bedroom closest to the street if you ahve that option. We chose to (duh!) and it can get kind of loud if your windows are open. But, I love the neighborhood. Some background on us- married, 30's, professionals. No kids (yet). Mr drives to work in Shadyside, I take the bus to Oakland (by choice). The neighborhood is very "old"...meaning most of our residents have lived here their whole lives, in the same house. I think only 4 or 5 houses on the whole street have sold within the last 10 yrs, and that's b/c the owners died! Both of my neighbors are in their 80's. Is there crime? Sure, I guess...the shopping center is utilized by Crafton, Crafton Heights, Sheraden, etc. But on our street, the cop just cirlces...all day, all night. Actually, a little secret? 2 cops live on our street. Didn't mean to ramble...if you need any more info plz email me thru my profile...I would love to sell you on my neighborhood!!! |

Now, I think I am missing something..Ingram Ave isn't very long....it goes from the Sharp Edge to the 7-11 by the Busway. Its only ~12 blocks long. Where is it "ghetto"? You've got me scared now!

I live in Crafton. Take a ride behind Industrial Blvd. Go back past UPS, and go thru Fairywood on Broadhead Fording Rd, it is literally a drug drive thru there on Fairywood/Prospect Avenues. You can also get there off of Windgap Ave. This section is particularly bad, there are projects that were built back there, but were shut down. They all moved into the houses over in that area. Ingram, directly isn't bad. But it's surrounded by rougher areas, anything city around there is rough. If you think not you may need a wakeup call, 4 people were shot over in the Heights within the past 2 months. Is Ingram horrible? No Are the better areas? Yes CT |

Oh, I see. I was confused b/c you said "Ingram Ave. in Ingram is quickly becomming an outright ghetto". Fairywood is not Ingram Ave. Neither is Crafton Heights.
Yes, those were "ghetto" like. They all have been torn down, and as mentioned on another thread, have been made into townhouses. And those areas are actually difficult to get to. You don't just "wind up" there or have to pass thru them to get anywhere else. I have lived in Ingram for almost 4 yrs, and just a few weeks ago learned where those projects were! Have I ever noticed anything wrong in my neighborhood b/c of it? No. "But it's surrounded by rougher areas". Um, that's all of Pittsburgh! Just about every nice neighborhood is bordered by a rougher one. Even precious Fox Chapel has to share their shopping center with Lincoln-Lemington neighbors across the river. Ingram is also surrounded by Robinson Twp, Crafton and Thornburg, which are nice neighborhoods. Are there better areas? Absolutely. Was this neighborhood a great fit for me and my family, and my house in my price range? Absolutely. I coulnd't afford to live in those neighborhoods where there is NO crime (where is that, anyway? . We originally were looking in Crafton, but found a great house in Ingram instead. Its a difference of 1 block (actually one shopping center). You will find trash in whatever neighborhood you choose. Whether it be here in Pgh, or anywhere on the globe. I find it interesting that you mention a shooting in the Heights...which is your neighbor as well. Do you not like Crafton? I am not attacking, just curious really... |
