The list came from Wikipedia, plus the last three from my personal knowledge. There are no beaty schools, quilting schools, etc on this list. All of them I am familiar with are degree-granting institutions. The Community College of Denver is the only two year institution that I know of on this list.
Here is their list for Pittsburgh:

I was just saying, because I see little schools in buildings downtown, and even in strip malls. They are for like getting trained for drafting, or some other trade for a job. I would count schools on the number of actual colleges in the city. In Denver there was D.U. and (I forget the name) that campus that had Metro, CU of Denver, and other smaller schools in it.
Pittsburgh has good schools with beautiful campuses like Pitt University, CMU, Chatham, and Duquesne.

Denver has DU. The University of Colorado at Denver, and Metro State College are at the Auraria Campus downtown. Regis is in NW Denver. The Art Institute of Colorado is in Denver also. All of the above are four year, degree-granting institutions. Unless a lot has changed in just the past year, since I was last there, Pitt and Duquesne do not have campuses of great beauty, like say Penn State with acres of green grass. You are always dodging cars at Pitt. CMU? Medium-looking. Chatham has a nice campus as I remember it, but it's not very large. Back to Denver: DU has a nice campus in a nice part of town, would be the rough equivalent of CMU. UCD and metro are the rough equivs of Pitt. Regis has a small campus in NW Denver. DU, Regis and UCD have graduate schools.

If you naming these we still have a ton. The ITT Tech Institute and Bradford School in Station Square come to mind.
It's about quality, not quantity, anyway.

Actually, boylocke, I agree. However, this was the original question:

Herodotus Speaking of colleges, is there any city other than NYC, Boston, LA, and Chicago that can top Pittsburgh's collection of schools?
|
I learned a long time ago that one should never say, "My city is the only city that has (fill in the blank). You are likely to meet someone who will say, "oh, no it's not". My father, may he rest in peace in the Beaver Falls cemetary, used to say stuff like that about Pittsburgh. He would take people who came to visit, usually members of my mom's family from Wisconsin, for a ride on the Pennsylvania Turnpike, because no one else had such a road. Now the PA Pike was the first, and that may have been true in the 40s, but by the time that I remember it, in the 60s, everybody had limited access 4 lane roads such as this. I was a grown woman before I learned that most every city has its benefactors, whose names show up on public buildings, like Heinz, Mellon, Frick. (Think Coors, Bonfils, Boettcher (sp?) in Denver, Wrigley in Chicago, etc.) It's good to be proud of your city, don't get me wrong. I'm proud of mine. I bought my car at John Elway Honda (John wasn't there at the time, probably busy coaching football for Cherry Creek High School). I remember when I met my husband, I told him Joe Namath went to my high school. He said, "How interesting. Gale Sayres went to mine. He ran track with my brother." Everyone has a claim to fame. Embrace it, but don't think you're the only one.

I was thinking quality more than quantity. I don't know much about UD, but I'd be shocked if it was anywhere near what CMU is. CMU is a true elite school. I know Pitt is an AAU school. Are there any AAU schools in Denver?

Well, not in Denver, but UC Boulder is, which is just about 25 miles down the road. With urban sprawl, Denver-Boulder just about runs together these days.
DU is no comparison to CMU, but UC Denver has a med school probably similar to Pitt.

Oh gosh, yes. If the IVY league schools didn't self- proclaim themselves and added more to their ranks, CMU would most definitely be considered. More than considered, actually.
