Yeah it didn't help when we were on yahoo.com last week for being the poorest mid-sized city in the country. And crime is still a HUGE problem; I believe we were 9th most dangerous city in America last year. But we have a new mayor who is trying some interesting new things, one of which was a plan for revitalization called Youngstown 2010. One of the goals of the plan is to make Youngstown an attractive place to live for commuters to Pittsburgh/Cleveland/Akron. We already have a lot of commuters living in the metro area, but the city itself still isn't the most attractive place.

Herodotus is on a distinguished road
Steubenville has been trying to market itself as a Pittsburgh suburb. The problem is, with Pittsburgh's lack of growth, there is no real reason to take on such a major commute. It's not like anyone is being priced out of the metro, the way they are in NYC.

Wouldn't it be in both cities best interest to try to harness that particular job market? That way, it would double the size of the area (relatively speaking -- like Seattle/Tacoma) and perhaps it would "seem" more appealing to the masses?
Seattle and Tacoma are 28 miles apart. That is like the distance between downtown Beaver Falls and downtown Pittsburgh. Pittsburgh and Cleveland are 136 miles apart (per Rand McNally). I know there's not a lot of open land between the two (and yes, I know there is in some places, for those of you ready to pounce), but that's a big distance to bridge.

You have a valid point. However, the point IS to merge them. When I lived in Seattle, it was very difficult to tell where Seattle ended and Tacoma began. I wasn't trying to imply that the "entire" 136 miles be one great big happy family, but rather, one large conglomerate that gradually "blends."

I think, in time, this will happen, weather it's planned on not.

A LOT more people are going to have to move there, for anything like that to happen.

That's really not necessarily true. If my quick math skills were right, the Pheonix Metro Area could engulf both Pittsburgh and Cleveland. What's more, if Pittsburgh and Cleveland were part of the same Metro, it would be bigger in population than Pheonix. That's just one little, crude, example. (For the record, I don't think this would ever happen anytime soon, lol).

I think i remember hearing something Biotech being one of the industries Cleveland and Pittsburgh were trying to get together on.

Also, as Boardmanite already mentioned, Y-town is still hurting, but most of the youngstown/Warren suburbs are actually very nice and crime free. If you think Cleveland and Pittsburgh are cheap you should live here! That would explain why so many from greater cleveland are moving closer to Warren and many from pittsburgh live in the youngstown suburbs of poland, canfield and boardman. I know a lot of natives to the y-town area that lost jobs here and now commute to either cleveland, pittsburgh or akron. This is because they don't want to move away from our outstanding COL and convienent location.
