I just realized the author appears to be from Pittsburgh (noted in the artcile he went to Taylor Allederdice). Does that mean he can disparage Pittsburgh?

I still dislike the use of his sterotypes, even if he knows better. He's not Pittsburgh enough, or something.

I have no idea how far into the city his district stretched, but I believe it was fair chunk of the eastern part of the city.
If you paste this link into Google Maps you can see the outlines of the districts in his time. PA 18 dodged the City:

But, history shows that he had a lot more support in allegheny county, and even the city, than people on here want to remember.
Again, I think it is highly relevant that in 2006, he was soundly rejected by Allegheny County. That should allow us to wash our hands of him.

I'm looking at a detailed map of the 1990s Congressional Districts right now. Santorum was in eastern and southern Allegheny County. He did not have any of the City of Pittsburgh.

At the time he was in Congress, the 18th CD was comprised of: Carnegie, Scott, E half of Heidelberg, Dormont, Mt. Lebanon, Baldwin, Castle Shannon, Whithall, Brentwood, S. Park, Jefferson Hills, Pleasant Hills, West Mifflin, West Homestead, Munhall, Dravosburg, Glassport, Clairton, Lincoln, Elizabeth, W. Elizabeth, Elizabeth Twp., Forward Twp., Liberty, Port Vue, McKeesport, White Oak, Versailles, N. Versailles, S. Versailles, Duquesne, Braddock, Rankin, Swissvale, Wilkinsburg, Reserve, Shaler, Millvale, Etna, O'Hara, Fox Chapel, Aspinwall, Sharpsburg, Indiana, Harmar, Springdale Boro, Springdale Twp., Blawnox, Verona, Oakmont, Penn Hills, Forest Hills, Churchhill, Turtle Creek, Monroeville, Pitcairn, Wall, Wilkins, Chalfant, East Pittsburgh, E. McKeesport, Wilmerding, Whitaker.

Santorum won the 18th CD in 1990 and 1992, the district changed considerably between the 2 elections after reapportionment.

I'll admit I don't know what it looked like in 1990.

I don't remember exactly what it looked like, but the 1980's 18th included a lot more close in suburbs than the 1990's version, and in the 1990 reapportionment, the state legislature was really intent on sticking it to Rep. Santorum.

Pennsylvania lost seats that year, and they combined the 18th with the 20th CD which was centered in McKeesport and Joseph Gaydos was retiring. A lot of Democratic areas were added to the CD, and a full dozen Democratic challengers fought it out in the primary.

The guy that won was someone that was on the outs with the Democrats, they could never get it together, and Santorum won reelection in a Democratic year in spite of a 3-1 registration disadvantage.

Say what you want about the Post and their sensationalized headlines, but they are one of the few NYC papers that actually still covers NYC news. The NY Times sure doesn't. You'll see far more New Yorkers on the subway reading a NY Post or NY Daily News than the Times because of that.
