Default Welcome to the Birthplace of Pop Culture

VisitPittsburgh coins new name for city to attract visitors: 'Birthplace of Pop Culture'

It is pretty amazing to see all of the pop culture things that were created in Pittsburgh. From KDKA radio to the Banana Split to Andy Warhol and so on. I am sure some other cities have an impressive list also. It would be hard to beat Pittsburrgh though.

I have to say that I think that pretty much stinks.

It doesn't exactly roll off the tongue (I like "Pop City" a lot better).

And despite the length, it is hardly self-explanatory--in fact the truth is that while Pittsburgh has indeed played a significant role in pop culture, the nature of pop culture is that it is "born" everywhere all the time.

Oh well--at least it sounds like they didn't blow a bunch of money on someone to come up with it.

I hope it gets shelved, quickly. If it was true, then it wouldn't need to be said. WWWS?

Bad idea like making Cincinnati the U.S. music center in the mid 1930s and later making Cleveland the Rock and Roll hall of fame. Canton has the football hall of fame. Pgh. has enough deserved accolades without need for overdoing it.

Yeah, the new name is a bummer. It's awkward and tacky. I would be uncomfortable using it.

Pop culture is too nebulous to trace back to just one city. Hell, the sound of rock and roll was created in Memphis, and the term was created by Alan Freed in Cleveland. American Bandstand was filmed in Philadelphia. Hollywood is a neighborhood in Los Angeles. Nashville is the epicenter of country music. Pittsburgh has contributed a lot, but not enough to claim itself responsible for the creation of pop culture as we know it.

A better marketing slogan would be "Welcome to the 'burgh. Buy somethin' n get the hell out!"

The pop culture reference is about as cool as the Stillers mascot, Steely McLoser

Another bomb from Visit Pittsburgh. I guess they want to use it for promo literature to get conventions to come here. They're not the most creative bunch down there.

Instead of "Birthplace of Pop Culture" they should promote Pittsburgh as "Last Stronghold of the Mom and Pop Stores." Now that's something visitors might actually want to see.
