For me, personally, I don't like the look of street lights at all. Granted, the new LEDs the city is installing look more aesthetically pleasing than the hideous sodium lamps, but I still find them ugly. I do think they are valuable in the city, but I love the feel of a nice, star-strewn night far too much to want them in suburban areas.

There's nothing quite like walking through a neighborhood with no street lights on a nice night, especially one where many of the houses have soft accent lighting on their houses. The warmth of the accent lighting gives you the distinct feel of humanness (as opposed to being totally in the wilderness), whereas the darkness lets you feel that you are outside, in mother nature, at night. I love it.

I think this is why I'm a little either/or on the subject.
