Most Pittsburghers are tollerant of people's religous (or nonreligious) views and aren't in-your-face religious. It's a common topic among teenagers because many are trying to figure it all out. If she raises the issue, she'll certainly inspire some interesting discussions with her peers (I've overheard those discussions carpooling), but I can't say she would be "seriously looked down upon." This falls more into as-long-as-it-doesn't-interfere-in-my-life-believe-whatever-you want-category. Religion just isn't super big here, not like in the South. People aren't going to ask what church you belong to or what religion you are. She's the one who would have to bring it up. If she is outspoken, a few teens might tease (as I've heard) her but not seriously. As a matter of the fact, the ones I heard teasing an outspoken athiest teen were agonistic and athiest themselves. Their teasing had more to do with his in-your-face insulting others who held different views than his being athiest.

I agree Pittsburgh is pretty tolerant when it comes to religion--I suspect it dates back to when every immigrant subgroup had its own sect and own places of worship (hence the sheer number around), which instilled a "to each their own" mindset about religion.

Check City High.
City Charter High School - Pittsburgh, PA
It's a great charter high school. You don't have to live in the city to attend. It's name is just City High, but it's not a city public school. It's a charter. The school is located in a downtown highrise building (soon moving to Gateway Center), right among area businesss Downtown.
Students do interships at corporations to identify their career goals. The school year is year round with weeks off every quarter instead of the entire summer, to replicate the real world work environment. The school hours are also more like work hours. It has a business casual dress code. All students are issued laptops.
It's just a really neat school. Do your research about admission. New students aren't accepted in upper grades because the school wants them to complete the majority of the program. In other words, you can't wait until your child is a junior or senior to enroll him/her. They only accept new students at 9th and 10th grades (and there are waiting lists). This would have been a great school for one of my children, but I only heard about it the summer before 11th grade.

Oh, all right. That's good to hear.

Daughter = Too old, and would've been interested
Son = Perfect age, but not interested
That's disappointing. That does seem like a great school. If only we'd thought about relocating a year ago!

Bummer. Would either be interested in CAPA? The city school district's performing arts high school?

I agree that Greensburg is too far out, if there is a specific reason you want to be close to Pittsburgh. Greensburg is not a bad little city itself though with a fair amount of young people because of the colleges(Pitt-Greensburg Campus, Seton Hill). Nice big parks, Mall, restaurants, retail etc.
If its just a general 'want to be close to the city' comment, you will not find a lot of reasons to go downtown, unless its for a game or something. You won't be making that trip for no reason on a daily, or even weekly, basis unless you work there.
I am more familiar with the Eastern side, so I will give you my opinion. If you want a really good school district the closest real good ones to the city are Franklin, Norwin, and Penn-Trafford.
Franklin is Murrysville, PA mostly, and most things are out of your price range. You could find some cheaper houses in that SD further down 22 in Export..but you might want to read the KKK thread before looking there(though i am sure its just a handful of idiots)
Norwin is about half an hour from Pittburgh, but unlike Murrysville..its a nice little walkable town. Alot of run-downish older houses near the town itself, and a bunch of more expensive subdivisions surriounding it. Your kinds aren't going to have a ton to do but its cheap, safe, half hour or so from PGH, and near a ton of retail.
Penn Trafford is a weird one, really long school district. You start in a little town called Trafford and drive past 20 minutes of housing subdivisions on Route 130 until you get to Jeannette (ok slight exagerration, Harrison City is on the way). Trafford is the end of a Pittburgh city bus route which i find to be a major plus..so the kids could go to Monroeville mall, downtown to a game or whatever..a lot of places without mom having to drive them. Safe enough place, good school district but again..not a real lot for kids to do.

The living near Pittsburgh thing is a personal preference of ours. We used to live about 30 minutes from a large city, and only when we moved did we realize just how much we liked the option of driving into a bigger city on the weekend, even if we didn't do it all the time.
Though Greensburg does seem quite nice, now that I'm looking at it. Even though we all want to, Dad is the only one who's really adamant about living near Pittsburgh. If I can get him to bend some, maybe I'll look into it...as well as ways to occupy teenagers on a long car ride.
*
The things to do one is a must. Daughter will fall into a depression (not even exaggerating) if she doesn't have things to do. She doesn't need huge plazas, but she needs things to do. She currently hates where we live because she "can walk for an hour and go nowhere".
* Could anybody provide me with some more information on the Greensburg, in case I do decide to check it out? How is the layout of the town (generally) when it comes to residential/downtown areas (meaning, if we had the urge, could we walk from our house to somewhere...more interesting? Or would we probably have to drive)? What are some notable points about the town?
