I drive that every day my man. I read somewhere awhile ago that the intersection between Maytide and Rt. 88 is the most congested are in Western PA and I believe it. My favorite is trying to avoid it by driving off the various side streets that stem off of 51 which often lead into insanely dangerous roads.

Granted, if you live in the suburbs, or hang out in the suburbs, you might be in trouble, haha, but the city is really easy to navigate via bike and small enough that it's quite doable.

Like I said, I put about 3,000 miles a year on my car and that's including road trips. And I'm not even hardcore, haha, I do drive around town quite a bit in lieu of cycling.
The bike would help a lot if you live a logical distance from the biking trails (and can ride a bike of course). I live in a hilltop hood and biking anywhere is impractical.

I don't know where people have the free time to take the bus aside from going to downtown and Oakland. For example I'm a big beer guy and I get growlers from East End a lot. By car it takes about 25 minutes to get there but by bus it would take around an hour 1 way (this is according to Google maps). Plus I'd have warm beer on the way back and no one wants that!

Id believe that too. Didn't the idiots who built 51 (especially through the city) ever hear of turning lanes!?! Those alone would make 51 a lot less of a nightmare. I think the people who think McKnight is a pain need to take 51 at 5 pm on a weekday to know what true torture is.

I honestly have no idea why people complain about McKnight. It isn't bad. I grew up east of the city, so Monroeville was my common stomping ground. 22 will easily just straight up gridlock. I have never been in a gridlock on McKnight...even around the holidays with shopping. Just recently, it took me 30 full minutes to go from Monroeville Mall to Miracle Mile on 22 because of holiday shopping traffic plus rush hour.

51 is about the biggest disaster I've ever seen. It can take FOREVER to navigate 51. That makes the Parkways bearable at rush hour. I cannot believe the 51/88 intersection is still the way it is. I've been late for two weddings because of 51!

If you live in the East End it helps to have a car, but you won't necessarily put a lot of miles on it, because most of your trips will likely be pretty short.

I imagine that when the idiots who built 51 were building 51, there wasn't nearly the amount of traffic as there is today. According to Wikipedia, it was designated in 1927: Pennsylvania Route 51 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

it's perfectly practical to ride a bike on city streets and even up and down hills! maybe not for you, maybe not for everyone, but bikes are not restricted to bike trails or flat terrain.

I drive less because I live in a city neighborhood where I can walk to anything I need.

I also drive less to stop the urge of dragging some of these fools out of their vehicles and landing myself in jail.
