They're not going to put security cameras in the bathrooms, that's just not going to happen.

The security measures in the Cathedral are ridiculously non-existent. Other buildings on campus require you to swipe your ID to enter at all times, or on certain floors, or after hours. The Cathedral is open 24 hours a day, meaning any meathead, bored kid, or junkie can walk in and have 40 floors to play on and decorate.

Now, I'm not saying you need security up the *cough* just because of this. If some loser wants to write on the bathroom walls, there's really nothing that can be done to deter it (short of catching the person, fining the hell out of them, and putting them in jail for a little bit). Find a bathroom on campus, or a wall in Oakland, that doesn't have graffiti. But if we're really talking about security---and common sense---they could start with some common sense measures like restricting access after hours.

People just have no respect for each other and each others' property. No amount of cameras or rude security guards will change that, unfortunately.

Hope they got the right guy, and that he's the only one involved. They'll probably give him a hefty punishment to make an example for all the copycats out there.

No security cameras, but they do have campus police sitting in the men's rooms on the lower levels. This will discourage people from vandalizing, and from pooping outside the home.

It is ridiculous, and I hope whoever is responsible is caught and punished. I don't have classes at the Cathedral, but am enrolled as a student and received this email today:
--------------------------
March 23, 2012

Dear Students:

As you are probably well aware, the University of Pittsburgh has had three false bomb threats at the Cathedral of Learning recently, as well as false fire alarms in various locations. These incidents have caused concern and frustration for our entire campus community, and I am writing to assure you that we take your safety and these threats seriously. I also want to provide you with an update on what is transpiring as we work to identify the individual or individuals who are responsible.

First and foremost, I want to encourage you to continue to take any emergency notification seriously. Even though the recent threats have been false alarms, please continue to respect the seriousness of emergency notifications and follow any instructions you may receive. Upon confirmation of an emergency situation that is an immediate threat to the well-being of our students and campus community耀uch as a bomb threat 謡e immediately evacuate the building and secure the area, and activate our Emergency Notification System (ENS) to inform students, parents, faculty, and staff of the situation via phone, text messages, and e-mails.

If you have not already registered for the ENS system, please do so by going to:
Emergency Notification Service | Computing Services and Systems Development | University of Pittsburgh

Pitt Police and other authorities have responded quickly to the recent emergency situations and have worked collaboratively with the City of Pittsburgh, state police, and federal authorities to investigate. Pitt Police have also increased patrols, and authorities are processing evidence recently gathered. A suspect also was recently arrested, charged, and jailed in the string of false fire alarms that occurred last week.

Be assured that suspects will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law, and if proven guilty, sanctions could include imprisonment, fines, and dismissal from the University (if a student is involved). Regrettably, we have had students prosecuted and sentenced in the past, so I just want to reach out to you to make certain that you understand the seriousness of these situations and how you might be able to assist. If you are aware of any suspicious activities, or anybody engaging in these specific types of activities, please report tips anonymously to Pitt Police at 412-624-2121.

Unfortunately, as in every community, crime is a reality. However, I assure you we will continue to make campus safety a top priority and work diligently to identify and prosecute individuals who commit crimes and disrupt our campus community.

Sincerely,
Kathy Humphrey, PhD
Vice Provost and Dean of Students

I truly hope whoever keeps calling in these threats in order to get out of having a class or test, gets caught and jailed. Making terroristic threats is extremely immature, disruptive, and destructive to this University.
