Just for fun... here are the 2012 statewide school district rankings released by the Pittsburgh Business Times last week. I ranked them for each suburban county. There are almost 500 school districts in PA, so I colored districts in the top half green and the bottom half red. I bolded schools in the top 50 and bottom 50. I included the "average" score for each county. Some districts cross county lines... and I am not sure if all of the multi-county districts are accounted for in this list... but that's too much effort for me right now.

My first thought is: these counties have more rural area than suburban and urban combined. I don't really think of them as Pittsburgh suburbs, though obviously some of the close in communities are.

Most of Aliquippa & parts Beaver Falls are similar to Arnold & part of New Kensington. Uniontown and Masontown are similar to New Castle. Monessen & Donora are similar to Brownsville & Connelsville... Ambridge is similar to Jeanette. IMO these long lost-hard hit, declining rivertowns/parts of river towns have almost identical towns in other PGH Metro county's.

For quality of living (from best to worst), I would rate Westmoreland and Washington as tied at 1 then Butler at 2, Beaver 3, Fayette 4 and Armstrong 5.
