Default Wexford or McMurray?

Can anyone tell me which one would be better for a downtown commute? Also if you know anything more than....the schools are great, and they are both new areas, please chime in! I am having a lot of trouble finding out any information about these. We are coming down next weekend to see the area for the first time and will probably focus on these two area because they are near a preschool we like.

LOL -- I think that must be Realtor Time. ;-)

From the Wexford onramp to the 6th Street offramp, *maybe*, on a good day, driving fast. I'd add at least 15 minutes for getting to the highway and to your destination once you're off the highway.

20 min? Really? Most maps say at least 30 min....guess that depends on speed. Would you take 19 to I-279? Or I-79 to I-279? The apartments we are looking at are closer to 19, but it looks like there is shopping along the way and I'm guessing quite a few stop lights on it. Also, does anyone know if 19 is the best way to get to McMurray? My husband we be working at 16th St. and Liberty Ave.

Wexford has *new* money and McMurray has the *old* money has has moved from Upper St. Clair and they want more land and a bigger/newer house *plus* half the taxes!

Both nice areas. If you can add 5 minutes to your drive, I'd check out Venetia, which is basically McMurray, only it has nicer/new homes and old, old money. LOL Most of the people on the census owned their own business in Venetia, or were a doctor or lawyer. If you can handle the upper crust attitude with an occasional farmer thrown in - you're golden.

Please explain "old" money vs "new" money to me. Yes, I am being sarcastic. I never heard people in Pittsburgh talk like this before. I first heard that kind of talk from the kids in Philadelphia when I was at Pitt. I take it "old" is better than "new". Isn't the American dream to do better than one's parents?

Not necessarily. It all depends on perspective.

The two don't mix well in social circles so it's best to point out which neighborhoods are which so people can chose the one that best fits them.

I understand what you are asking. I would say that *old money* is a family that has been in the upper class/earning rate for several generations. Heinz, Carnegie, etc.
Here: http://www.city-data.com/forum/newre...eply&p=1493298 It basically reads:

7. Old Money

At the turn of the century, Pittsburgh contained more wealth than any American city except New York, thanks to industrialists like Andrew Carnegie and Henry Clay Frick. Their stories and the kingdoms they built from coal, iron, glass and steel are captured in the city's neighborhoods, architecture and culture. Carnegie, for instance, amassed one of the world's great dinosaur fossil collections including a towering T-Rex on display at The Carnegie's Museum of Natural History.
A very different relic awaits you on the grounds of the Frick Art & Historical Center where Frick's chateau-like estate, Clayton, has been painstakingly restored. Architectural Digest called Clayton "a triumph of restoration." The Frick Art & Historical Center, offers a free art museum, carriage museum, playhouse, greenhouse, cafe and lush strolling grounds.

My husband and I would be considered "nouveau riche" because we came from blue collar up bringings with uneducated parents. Through hard work and I would imagine some good luck, we are now considered "the Nouveau riche" Basically new money.
Usually the "old rich" do not like nor welcome the "new rich" and many nouveau riche can be very flashy and rude about how much money they have.
From what I have observed, the people who have had wealth in their family for years are much less likely to wave it in your face, buy bigger and bigger houses every year, or make you feel like **** because you don't drive a bimmer.
Now don't get me wrong, there are some flashy "old rich" people out there, but I usually only see them out and about at charity functions.
