[quote]I'm not as familiar with Homewood, but I don't think the City's divisions mean much of anything (except insofar as say West Homewood having more industry, but that doesn't mean enough [quote]

Homewood North aka North Homewood is only revered when talking about the Molher Projects, Bruston Ave, & like Wheller Street... Other than that north, west, south= Homewood

Could you explain this to me a bit more?

Looking on Google Maps, the places you mention are all butt ugly. The Molher projects look like 1960s barracks, and the other two areas are mostly gone.

In contrast, I actually think the parts of Homewood North I've seen more towards the City are quite nice, minus the safety issue. Neat grid pattern, wide sidewalks, and tree lined streets. Coupled with the housing style, if I took my glasses off I might be able to think I was in Friendship.

Unofficially North Homewood is the area of Homewood North "up the hill" from Brushton Ave to Blackadore Avenue (border between Homewood, Pittsburgh & Lincoln Park-Hilltop, Penn Hills)... That area is hilly & very much a wooded area; in slang terms that part of Homewood is called "the cut" or "Hilltop".
The rest of Homewood is spilt up unofficially as:
"U.P.T." or "UpTown"= most of Homewood North from the Upland Park-Brushton Ave
"DownTown" or "Down Bottom"= equivalent to Homewood South, east of Murtland-south of Frankstown
"Homewood West" or "Tha Woods" or "Dallas"= basically most of Homewood West, west of Murtland Ave south of Westinghouse
Probably since '94 this unofficial split up of Homewood has played into the gang element as well

Btw Molher looks nice compared to NVH, Reed Roberts Manor, Chauncey Drive, Bentley/Elmore Square & Formosa Way-Collier Street/what's left of Arlington Heights which are still standing-currently being demolished... Or the real barracks that are gone such as: BroadHead Manor, Westgate, St. Clair, Bracey Drive, Allequippa Terrace, "Rob it son Ckourt" & Francis Court

What about the portion of the City's Squirrel Hill East of Beechwood? Basically the blocks around the cemetery.

Like Kinsman Rd? I'd call it Squirrel Hill. Realtor called it Squirrel Hill when she showed me a house there she's lived in the area forever, so that's a consensus by your definition I guess

I think the map is currently accurate showing North of Wilkins and East of Beechwood is PB. The rest is SH.

I think I'll work on the North Side over the weekend. Anyone have any suggestions. I'm going to separate East and West Deutchtown, and the War Streets and Hoodtown, but I don't know beyond that what would make sense.

Living in the Central Northside, I have *never* heard the term "hoodtown" used outside of this forum. And with homes in that area going for at least the low 100's, if not even higher, I don't think the name really applies anymore anyway.

Some other thoughts:

-Chateau should probably be completely excluded, and rolled in with the North Shore. It only has 11 residents, and nobody really calls the area by that name.

-I would extend Allegheny West to include the blocks between North and Pennsylvania

-Sandusky Ct (Allegheny Dwellings) should probably be included with whatever neighborhood you put AGH in. I don't think it really feels like part of the Fineview neighborhood.

-Herr's Island should be separated from Troy Hill

-West of Vinial Street should be East Deutschtown, not Troy Hill.

The reason why the official city neighborhoods are defined as they are is because they are based upon US Census tracts, which provides a wealth of statistical information per neighborhood that Pittsburgh would otherwise need to get for itself. I can definitely see the value in that approach and won't fault the city for it. The unfortunate effect is that the neighborhood boundaries can be somewhat skewed from where they would be ideally, most notably in my area a Friendship that is much shrunken from it's "real" boundaries. I have noticed that the city puts up neighborhood names on street signs that reflect the "real" neighborhood and not the official ones, such as Friendship signs in Bloomfield, or signs for Park Place or Mexican War Streets, which aren't official neighborhoods in their own right.

There is definitely some marketing value in using The Mexican War Streets signs because the City touts them as a sort of tourist attraction. I've also noticed street signs that say "Charles Street Valley." I guess that's just a pointless factoid, but one that illustrates LI's point in a way.
