A Very Good Read

Quote:
After a week in Pittsburgh for my photographer friend Gabrijela (see her photos to the left) and me, I am now back in Munich, Germany trying to choose the things that meant most to us on this trip. It's difficult because every day was like a jewel and we are very grateful for the time we could spent in town. We desperately miss Pittsburgh already........

That was our week in a nutshell. Back home I am missing Pittsburgh and its people from the bottom of my heart and Gabrijela can't wait to get her favorite photo model city in front of her lens again. Thank you Pittsburgh for your hospitality, your beauty, for being such an inspiration and, surprisingly enough, a full week of bright spring sunshine.

A European perspective of Pittsburgh

Very nice read. You can see how Pittsburgh would appeal to European visitors, since it combines a bit of the Old World feel with a lot of pure Americaness.

It definately appeals to europeans. We both grew up in ireland and Pittsburgh just felt like home. The hills reminded us of Cork along with the bridges. The history is great as are all the older buildings.

But the people and the food ; now thats in a class of its own.

Nice article. I just spent the week in my homestate of Virginia and missed this city/ area every day. You can have the beaches and warmer weather .. I will take these rustic hills any day! ....with a cup of coffee from La Prima thrown in!

Great article, and it made me smile a little: we travel to Bavaria to take pictures of rococo palaces, and the Bavarians travel to Pittsburgh to take pictures of bridges and skyscrapers.

Yep. That's exactly what my cousin from germany did as well. Actually they liked the view of the city from Mt Washington better than NYC

Very good read. It's nice to see people from around the world have such a good opinion of Pittsburgh. I also agree Pittsburgh has a good old world look/feel to it that's combined with America that makes this area feel a little different than most other American cities. I think we should use that old world feel many people think we have to our advantage and market it to others.

It's apparently not the old world aspects of Pgh which appeal to Europeans, however. These young Bavarian women were excited about Warhol and hot new restaurants, not Clayton and Allegheny Cemetery.

Which is perfectly understandable: when the "Old World" is what is around the corner from your flat, why would you bother to travel half-way around the globe to see more of it? I don't recall ever hearing many German accents in Hofbrauhaus Pittsburgh (though maybe that has as much to do with the mediocre beer and execrable food as the fact they have the real thing in their home town).

I agree, I think that our mixture of Old World feel and modern feel that is attractive. Pittsburgh is a very unique city and has spectacular views, and those who come for the first time are lucky enough to enjoy it with the view of an outsider.
