EPA updates gas, oil pollution rules - Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

Groundwater issues have gotten more attention, but this is actually a very serious public health issue, particularly in this area, and in general it goes to whether or not natural gas obtained through fracking is an overall cleaner energy source than coal (it burns much cleaner, but too much emissions on the extraction side could shift the balance). That in turn could affect the future competitiveness of natural gas (if we ever get around to more emissions-pricing). Moreover, as pointed out in the article, this is ultimately a rule which will pay for itself (through recaptured methane).

So this is a big win-win for our region.

A win, I guess...

Every company I know of in this region already uses methane/gas collectors when drilling new wells.

Drillers Say Costs Manageable From Pending Gas Emissions Rule - Bloomberg

Saving the environment was profitable. Adding EPA regulations will just mean more inspections cutting into profits.
