I was more talking about Shadyside in terms of the Walnut and Ellsworth art/culture festivals. Without gay people, they wouldn't exist and they ARE fun.
I'm talking about the plethora of trendy, up-scale, and delicious restaurants and coffee houses. And Walnut St still holds its own. It still has a few things that you can't really find anywhere else in Pittsburgh (or very FEW places) such as Pottery Barn, the Apple Boutique, and American Apparel, to name a few. Don't forget the several art galleries, too. And I love Glassworks. |

Hello all,
First off let me say I actually grew up in the suburbs of Pittsburgh but moved away at 17 after facing some problems in my home town. I've been living in N.C. the past 8 years in a little known ultra liberal community of Carrboro-Chapel Hill. My partner and I (believe it or not you can get a domestic-partnership in N.C. so long as you stay in this county) are looking to move back North for grad school after I graduate UNC this May. As such we are visiting cities that have schools I'm interested in. Does anybody have any suggestions on places to stay that will be welcoming? I've been in a gay bubble down here and haven't visited the area in 7 years so I really don't know what to expect. Ideally we would like to find a nice bed & breakfast north of Pittsburgh but I'm open to any suggestions. Thanks for the help! |

Being a gay male. I think Pittsburgh has some "gay" spots (Ellsworth in Shadyside and Liberty Ave. downtown) but we don't have a "gayborhood." The city is kind of scattered in that area. Which in some ways are good and some are bad. Good because it helps promote diversity in communities. Bad because it doesn't give Pittsburgh a reason to attract more gays from other cities.

What would everyone say is the top 5 areas of Pittsburgh that has the highest percentage of gay people and gay families? I can name 3 at the top of my head, but am wondering if anyone knows anything else?
1. Shadyside 2. Squirrel Hill 3. Mexican War Streets |

Maybe Regent Square? Of course, I may be reading too much into the fact a gay couple bought the house next door to ours (and did a great job renovating, I might note). But it does seem like I see a decent number of same-sex adult pairs walking around and in the local places (I won't claim to know for sure they are gay), and it would seem to me that it fits with the pattern above.
