there is male contact in India,Africa,Mid East...and to a degree in Southern European cultures
guys can dance, kiss, hold hands, sit on laps...and "gay" dosen't even cross their mind..
I had always thought this was because male/female contact in some cultures is forbidden (because of sex) but public same-gender affection is thought of as harmless, because in these same cultures homosexuality is also forbidden (or shameful, at the very least) so it would never occur to anyone that two men holding hands, etc. would be thought of as sexual.

Here is that poll in New Jersey.. very interesting, indeed.

Slim Majority In NJ Supports Gay Marriage (broken link)

Quote:
(Trenton, New Jersey) A slim majority of voters in New Jersey supports the right of same-sex couples to marry.

The Rutgers-Eagleton Poll, however, found that the vast majority prefer civil unions.

The survey was taken to coincide with the one year anniversary of the New Jersey Supreme Court ruling that said same-sex couples must have the rights as opposite-sex married couples.

The Rutgers-Eagleton Poll released Wednesday shows that 48 percent of the adults agree with same-sex marriage, while 44 percent oppose it.

Younger adults were more supportive than older people.

Nearly three in five people polled between 18 and 29 favor gay marriage, compared with about half of voters between 30 and 64, and one-third of those over 65.

The poll also found that people personally close to gays and lesbians supported gay marriage at a higher rate than those who don't have gay friends or relatives.

"Today's numbers show New Jersey is ready for marriage equality and it's coming to New Jersey, whether right-wing extremists out of touch with New Jersey like it or not," said Steven Goldstein, chair of Garden State Equality.

For the life of me, I simply do not understand why the gay community "leaders" are so stuck on the word "marriage"! I would be more than happy with a civil union; ANYTHING beats being treated like second-class citizens like we are now.

This coming from Mr. Equal But Separate!! Apparently civil unions aren't working like they should. Gay couples are trying to file for this and that or get this right or that right and sending copies of their civil union licenses and getting replies like, "this means nothing to us."

I am referring to the term "marriage", not the rights associated with it. We are entitled, as tax-paying American citizens, to ALL the rights hetero marriage grants. What I am saying is that trying to call it "marriage" will not work in my lifetime. To the opponents, that infringes on "traditional family values". What the hell ARE "traditional American Family values anyway?!?!? We refuse to pay for healthcare for our children and elderly, we couldn't care less for the poor, etc, etc. Yet, we sure can foot the bill to slaughter innocent Iraqis, torture "terrorists", tap our own citizens phones, and ignore the growing human rights crises in the Sudan...

"'I'm proud to be an American..." used to mean something.

It did in Massachusetts... LOL.

They are marriage, not civil unions.

Yes, and they are actively trying to repeal it, last I heard. Why argue semantics is my point. Give me the benefits and call it whatever you want. :-)

Yeah I agree with ya. They've been trying to appeal it since it launched like two or three years ago, it's not gonna happen.

Nor will there ever be a Constitutional amendment banning Gay marriage. Frankly, except for some very small groups in some very small backwater towns, I haven't encountered homophobia in well over a decade. :-) Simply put, nobody cares whether your gay or not.
