The impact of Section 8 is easy to downplay by those not living in the affected areas. The most disruptive home on our street for years has been section 8. They caused problems with drugs, noise, and trash on a regular basis. They were finally evicted and the difference has been tremendous. I'm not saying all Section 8ers are bad, but they have been the primary offenders here.

This project is getting fast-tracked, which apparently requires foregoing some of the federal tax credits:

I suspect this is a smart move: ideally you don't want to leave available financing on the table, but I'd bet dollars to donuts that moving this project along faster will more than compensate with increased economic benefits.

in a lot of ways the federal government is more of a hindrance than a help. in the private sector the majority of tax credits go unused because the complians rules that come with then often make the incentive unattractive. it seems like the public sector is concluding the same thing.

I disagree with you on that point. Whiteside road has been transformed into something else and has a a waiting list a mile long and ther has not been any major crime there since. Burrows, Alliquippa, Brackenridge and the "mad circle" (I forgot the real name) all have been changed and Elmore will be no different. Lets just tell the truth, Pittsburgh still has a large racist population and they do not want poor blacks living around them regardless how they act.

I don't feel mixed-income housing is the best for low income housing due to the fact that the rent as a base is entirely too high. What was once a ceiling rent of $600. is now $1900. You MUST be able to get government aide and put in a lottery to get an apartment, where as before if your income was such and such you qualified and the rent was affordable WITHOUT having to get government sect 8 or 30 percent. If you had too those choices were available but not ABSOLUTELY REQUIRED to move into our own community that was torn down and replaced with unreachable rent requirements. A JOKE!!
