Maybe they could buy Giant Eagle, but it wouldn't be with pocket change.

Trader Joe's 2011 estimated revenue = $8.5 Billion
Whole Food's 2010 revenue = $9.006 billion
Giant Eagle 2010 estimated revenue = $8.6 Billion

To answer why Giant Eagle does well even though the chain sux probably because alot of people are like me - I hate GE, but do 75% of my grocery shopping there because it's the only option convenient in my neighborhood (& it's a particularly bad GE store too). The better options are just a pain to get to & not something I like feel like driving too when I get home from work or on the weekend. If a whole foods or something was here I'd abandon GE in a heartbeat.
Granted none of this explains why say the shadyside GE does well with other available competitors in that same area.

We need a Wegmans or Harris Teeter in the area

That one out in Robinson doesn't look that different from a Wegmans. It's weird that they would have a few stores that are so deluxe, when all the others are mediocre. If the Robinson store is doing well, you'd think they'd make the other stores nicer too.

One difference between the dirty bird and Wegmans is the level of customer service. At GE I get mediocre service at best, while at Wegmans the workers are always extremely helpful. Giant Eagle needs to get employees and managers better at public relations

I'd hope people aren't choosing GE because they save a couple cents on gas by paying for overpriced groceries, but you never know

If you use the fuelperks to your advantage, they're extemely beneficial. Even if you never buy groceries at GE, go in, get giftcards for whatever else you plan to do, and boom, fuel savings. It really is a good program, you can argue it isn't all you want.

Also, we're back to everyone slamming Giant Eagle. Maybe I'm not cultured in supermarket world, but seriously, I swear people complain about GE just because the "cool kids" complain about it. It's a supermarket. I use my advantage card, coupons, and the circular. I know for a fact I'm paying way less than Shop 'N Save and Foodland. It also beats the HELL out of shopping at Wal-Mart. Wal-Mart's produce never even looks appealing and the meat I've gotten there has been continually lower quality.

Once again, I've been to Wegman's. It's a great store. If there was one here and it was convenient, I'd give it a fair assessment versus the Robinson Market District where I do my shopping. However, anytime I have walked into Wegman's, angels did not sing and my groceries were not free. Workers did not fly around with wings spreading joy and kindess everywhere they went. Be realistic people.

Don't be too fooled. Trader Joes = privately held company and doesn't payout to a bunch of stockholders. Trader Joes = all cash company with no debts and that includes when they buy grocery/open stores or anything that requires a lot of cash. Believe me, the difference can't be measured looking at revenue only. Whole Foods is probably similar in structure to the dirty bird. I suspect TJ's is by far the wealthiest of those three.

LOL and I agree. I am half a mile from GE and have no issues with it although I use it for small purchases. I do buy many gift cards from there and enjoy that perk. I am not bedazzled by Whole Foods or Trader Joes either. I would rather spend my organic dollar at Frankferd Farms or McGinnis Sisters any day. And there is always the commissary in Oakdale to fill in the gaps. Although it is the smallest and grimest commissary I have ever been in and too far away for regular trips. I think the "grocery wars" on here are about as funny as the "driving wars". I never get why individuals cannot simply have preferences without someone else deciding they are some how better because they choose differently.
