The National Aviary was already a hit with kids, but they have now added an outdoor play space:

National Aviary transforms garden into kids' play area - Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

Quote:
Condor Court is a new landscaped area that incorporates the display of the Aviary's pair of Andean condors into daily talks about the enigmatic bird, said Patrick Mangus, executive director of the National Aviary. . . . The court includes a fountain that children can play in, activity tables with educational materials and bird feeders to attract wild birds from the surrounding Allegheny Commons Park.
Sounds great! Incidentally, the National Aviary was already one of the cool places to host birthday parties, and Condor Court should enhance those as well.

That's just wonderful, when you combine this with the new free-flight area that just opened, it means that one of my favorite places in Pittsburgh just keeps getting better!

Great find Brian!

My only complaint about the Aviary is that I wish it was larger, but it's not easy for them to expand with a historic park and a street on all sides. But I think they do a great job with what space they have and I know they care a great deal about the birds (and sloth). The recent renovations have improved things considerably.

My wife was treated to a Flamingo Connection where some flamingos actually started to preen her hair. It was a wonderful experience for her.

The Aviary is indeed pretty small as top-shelf attractions go, but I actually think that works well for young kids.

It's small, but still a gem, and good for adults too!

I think this means I will give it another try. I took my daughters there last year and I felt like they didn't really enjoy it but the play area sounds like a great space.
